It's the 30th anniversary of Star Trek: The Next Generation and the 51st anniversary of the original Star Trek series (51st anniversaries are very important !)...so...

Which was best...Star Trek: TNG or Star Trek: TOS ?

And any thoughts on the new Trek show, Star Trek: Discovery ?

It's a tough one to answer but on the whole I prefer TOS - partly for purely nostalgic reasons as Star Trek didn't start broadcasting in the UK till 1969 and I was a viewer of those original broadcasts. Star trek is one of the first TV shows I remember watching.

I've seen trailers of Star Trek: Discovery on YouTube and I've read the comments complaining about the diversity in the show. One comment said it was the politically correct/socialist version of Trek - perhaps that commenter never noticed that the original series included a black woman and a Japanese man. But my main complaint is that it's yet another prequel set 10 years before the original series - after the terrible Star Wars prequels and the early cancellation of the prequel Enterprise series I'd have thought yet another prequel was a bad idea. Dr. Who has just been really bold and chosen a woman as the next incarnation and Star trek needs to be equally bold like setting a new series of Trek in the distant future far beyond Kirk, Picard etc instead of constantly clinging to that same time period - but that's just my opinion :)

Captain America
Iron man
Thor
The Vision (he's a must !)
The Wasp
Hawkeye
Spider-Man...only joking !!

Ah, a twofer Tuesday...

Star Trek- I'll go with Next Generation. When the original series was on, I never saw it- my parents had other tv preferences. My first exposure to Star Trek was actually via the 70's animated series. So I don't have any nostalgic affection for the original. Did regularly watch, and enjoy, Picard and his crew.

Avengers- Captain America, Vision, Scarlet Witch, Iron Man, Beast, Black Panther, and She-Hulk. Don't recall Hank and Shulkie ever serving together on the team, but it would be a lot of fun.

Heart belongs to Star Trek original series, but I really enjoyed many of the TNG episodes, my favourite being the one with the time loop where the Enterprise keeps blowing up.

My ideal Avengers roster is seen right on the cover of Avengers #168: Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, Vision, Scarlet Witch, Beast, Wonder Man.

For many years the core group for me was Beast, Wonder Man, Vision, Scarlet Witch, which I guess is why the Michelenie and early Shooter runs are my favourite. In issue #211 when the roster got so shaken up that all four of those members left...well, that was a dark day for this reader.

The Roger Stern years had many interesting rosters, I think my favourite was circa the mid-250s, Cap, Wasp, Capt. Marvel, Black Knight, Starfox and Hercules. I always like when the team has a couple of fish-out-of-water characters, like aliens or gods, that often provide a bit of humour.

Agreeing with Colin on the line-up.., I'd still love Hank in there as YJ, but agreed on Vision (WITHOUT Wanda...), it takes be back to the late Silver Age issues (like the brief Barry Smith tenure, anyone..?).

As for Trek, both series have their outstanding merits.., how can you beat the typical Kirk-Spock-McCoy landing party, especially in the Gene Coon-flavored 2nd year..?

But the Riker-Data-Worf away parties are always entertaining as well, especially in the 3rd-5th years.

TOS, TOS, TOS. "It is, and always will be, my favorite."

As for Discovery, I will watch the pilot but I can hardly believe it will good enough for me to pay the streaming CBS service.

Avengers roster.
Captain America
Wonder Man
Scarlet Witch
Ms. Marvel
Black Panther

I prefer the team with the least amount of characters as possible without their own titles.
Now for a creative team; Stern, Byrne, Austin.

Killraven said...

Whoops, I meant to say least with their own titles.

I think TNG is better, generally better stories, better acting. But I've got lots of sentimental attachment to TOS, so the original gets the nod from me.

My Avengers:
Vision
Wanda
Captain Marvel (Monica Rambeau)
Cap
Beast
She-Hulk
Iron Man

I was only introduced to Star Trek OS a couple of years ago thanks to Karen blogging about it over at the BAB site. I've watched most of the first two seasons and really enjoyed those immensely. I've tried some NG and felt it didn't have the same flavor. I'm a sucker for late 60s television though. NG was entertaining but not on the same level as OS which for me had a blend of nostalgia, weirdness, and philosophy.

My Avengers would be:

Cap
Wonder Man
Beast
Wasp (with guest appearances by YJ)
Scarlet Witch (with guest appearances from Pietro)
Vision
Hawkeye (perhaps in his Goliath guise)
Sersi (she was an Avenfer much later on and I enjoyed her run)

I've never been a Trekkie, so will skip the first question.

As to an Avengers line-up, give me:

Cap
Hawkeye
Vision
Wanda
Black Panther
Yellowjacket
Wasp

Obviously that line-up needs to be illustrated by John Buscema and Tom Palmer!

I'm watching Star Trek even as I type these deathless words because The Horror Channel over here's showing TOS and Voyager episodes back-to-back every day.

I'm not sure what it says about me but I seem to prefer the Voyager episodes.

I think there may be something wrong with me.

Steve Does Comics said...

Having said that, this episode doesn't seem to be very good. Everyone's got polystyrene in their hair and Neelix is waving a giant stuffed bee around.

Edo Bosnar said...

For Star Trek, it's kind of hard to pick, but TOS (in which I include the animated series and movies) edges out the others by a bit. I love the original crew, basically. Steve, there's absolutely nothing wrong with you. I'm very fond of Voyager, and usually say that's my second favorite, or rather my favorite follow-up series. That's not to say I don't really like TNG as well - they're kind of like 2A and 2B. DS9 was the weakest of the follow-ups for me, although I still like it.
I like to pretend Enterprise never happened (i.e., it was a holodeck program run for too long by Riker), and I'm not really fond of the NuTrek movies. Naturally, then, I'm not at all excited about Discovery. I totally agree with Colin's point about the need to just take the franchise in the future again, beyond the events of DS9 and Voyager, instead of rebooting the original, and rehashing events in that same fictional period. Boldly go, people, it's in the mission statement! (Also, over the past 10 years, I think the best new Trek material has been the fan-made episodes of Star Trek Continues and Phase II. If you're going to stories with the original characters, that's the way to go. I highly recommend finding these on YouTube, they're a real treat.)

It's hard for me to think of an absolute dream team for Avengers, there's too many characters I've liked as members of the team, more than seven, and I'm used to some occasional rotation of the roster. I'll just say that for me, the following characters need to be there:
Captain America
Wasp
Vision

Three more that I'd like there on a more or less permanent basis would be:
Beast
Wonder Man (preferably in his red safari jacket)
Photon (Monica Rambeau)

After that, it would be a rotating roster of more occasional members, when they're not busy doing other stuff:
Black Panther, Iron Man, Ms./Capt. Marvel (Carol Danvers), Thor, Yellowjacket and, very occasionally, just to make things interesting, Moondragon.

I prefer the original Star Trek, because of the characters, especially Spock.

I think I was ruined for all things Trek by BSG, but if I had to choose, it would be TNG.

To answer the question, I think TNG was "better" but my personal preference is TOS for sentimental reasons. I mean, cmon, Kirk and Spock!

My Avengers:

Thor
Iron Man
Cap
Vision
Scarlet Witch
Black Panther

That was the team when I started buying regularly in 1973 so they will always be my Avengers. Since I get to pick seven, I'll add Wonder Man (sorry Hawkeye).

And, oh gracious host Martinex, I believe you violated the Henry Prowler Gyrich directive. You have EIGHT Avengers. Haha.

Yeeeshh I cannot count today. I am going to drop Scarlet Witch (as much as I hate to) and let Sersi play both the newbie and the "strange power" role. Plus I think she would get along with Wonder Man and the Beast.

I am having a harder time with the Star Trek question than I am with the Avengers.

I loved the run when the team was:

Goliath
Wasp
Hawkeye
Black Panther
Vision
Scarlet Witch.

I would leave that last slot for a visiting member based on the adventure.

What I loved about TOS was the constant "deaths" of the nameless away team member ("Captain, over here. Aaagh") We lost that with TNG. TOS gave us the sense of that lone ship, out exploring, whereas TNG had almost constant interactions with the Star Trek universe. I don't know. TOS. That's my final answer. However, TNG had some strong storylines. Okay. TNG. But they did kill off Yar. So TOS. That's the one. TOS.

TNG.

No, TOS. Final answer...

(Whoa-oh-oh-oh-woha
There she stood in the street
Smilin' from her head to her feet;

I said, "Hey, what is this?
Now maybe, baby,
Maybe she's in need of a kiss."

I said, "Hey, what's your name?
Maybe we can see things the same.

"Now don't you wait, or hesitate.
Let's move before they raise the parking rate."

All right now, baby, it's a-all right now.
All right now, baby, it's a-all right now.

(Let me tell you now)
I took her home to my place,
Watchin' every move on her face;

She said, "Look, what's your game?
Are you tryin' to put me to shame?"

I said "Slow, don't go so fast, don't you think that love can last?"

She said, "Love, Lord above,
Now you're tryin' to trick me in love."

All right now, baby, it's a-all right now.
All right now, baby, it's a-all right now).

Avengers: Cap, Vision, Scarlet Witch, Beast, Wonder Man, Shulkie, and Ms. Marvel (Carol Danvers).

I like both Star Trek shows, so I can't really pick (though DS 9 is probably my favourite). I might check out the new show, but it's hard to get excited about it; I think too much time has passed since the last one.

I'm feeling nostalgic...

Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, Giant Man, and Wasp.

Never was much of a Trekkie though I will watch if I come across it on MeTV. Prefer the original.

The original Star Trek was the real deal. As impressive as TNG was it lacked the fundamental excitement which is invested in most original ST shows. I didn't see the old magic resurface really until Enterprise, the show no one seems to remember. DS9 and Voyager have virtues but both fall short of the original sauce.

Here's my Avengers roster -- Goliath, Wasp, Hawkeye, Vision, Black Knight, Beast, and Scarlet Witch. The Wasp would lead.

Rip Off

The problem I had with Next Generation was that it was like they said "We obviously got some things wrong with the original series, so we've fixed it up for this one" and in doing so leached out all the things that made the original a better show. Never bothered with any of the others, and the NuTrek simply show how subtle a character the original Jim Kirk was, and that the new one is not him.

As for Avengers....hmmm..

Captain America
Vision
Scarlet Witch
Quicksilver
Hawkeye
Black Panther
Iron Man

As long as the others can make the occasional guest appearance

Original Star Trek. I think TNG is so bland and toothless. Voyager is the only spin-off I've watched regularly and the focus is hopelessly split between about ten regular characters.

My Avengers roster is Cap, Thor, Iron Man, Vizh, Wanda, Wasp and Hawkguy. Avengers 201, basically.
