Two Questions: X-Men Rosters and Savory Snacks!

Martinex1: Here are a couple of questions for you to kick off the work week!

QUESTION 1:  We recently had a lively discussion about the Avengers and narrowing their team to your favorite seven (in perfect Henry Peter Gyrich fashion), but who would you have on your perfect X-Men team of six?  Would you lean toward the originals, or the all-new and all-different, or would you throw some oddballs in?  Who are your core six X-Men (Professor X is assumed as number seven- isn't he)?

QUESTION 2:  We have talked about our favorite candy and sweet beverages over the years, but what is your favorite salty or savory snack from your youth?  Was there any orange cheese puff residue left on your classic comics?

When I was a kid, my favorite salty snack was BBQ potato chips, any brand.

My perfect X-men line-up was basically the one prevailed for most of the Claremont/Cockrum/Byrne years: Cyclops, Storm, Nightcrawler, Colossus and Wolverine as the core team. My sixth member would be Banshee, with his powers. Barring that, I would put in Polaris, just to up the overall power level a bit and add another woman into the mix. Another possibility, which could have been done pretty easily back then, would have been adding Sunfire to the line-up once Banshee got knocked out - he was already guest-starring in those issues when that happened anyway.

I'm addicted to Chocolate Milk.

As for the other question, my favourite X-Men team was put right up on the splash page of Dave Cockrum's last issue of his first run (I think it was made a poster). Cyclops, Colossus, Wolverine, Storm, Banshee, Nightcrawler and Phoenix. Never got better than that (actually, it did, when the Beast guest-starred to fight Magneto).

I was a big fan of the team whenever the core group had Storm, Wolverine, Colossus and Nightcrawler.

I thought Rogue was an interesting addition years later, and I quite liked Longshot as a Nightcrawler fill-in (plus I always like an alien fish-out-of-water character to spice up any team). Unfortunately he only joined during the Mutant Massacre, which was when that core got all broken up, which contributed to my drifting away from the book in the late 80s.

1. My choice X-Men lineup: Nightcrawler, Storm, Colossus, Wolverine, Cyclops and Kitty Pryde. With Lockheed, by the way. Loved Jean Grey, but also appreciated the lightness that Kitty brought to the team. And it may be heresy, but the original team never fired me up. I collected and enjoyed the book and the characters, but found them less interesting than the other Marvel titles. But Wein and Cockrum's new team- that was a winner!

2. Back in the day, there was a brand called " Indian Corn Chips". I liked those, and always had a big fondness for a fistful of Cheez-It crackers...

I have a near-embarrassing question to ask you X-Men fans here.. I've seen the first ad drawing (of the old/new team) several times and I see Iceman with the hat, nose and broomstick.

Was this an incarnation of his look, or just an spoofy artistic rendering..? I'm assuming the later, but it was just odd that all the other 'original team' looked, well, 'normal'. Just curious.

Sooo, no I'm not an X-Men fan by any stretch, but if I did collect issues, it would be solely Silver or Bronze issues. Wolvie was kinda cool in the early '80s, but even I was mystified to discover after being gone from the MU for several years that Logan would somehow become Marvel's best seller (besides Spidey himself).

Salty snacks..? It was Frito's, and perhaps Bugles ALL..THE...WAY. :)

I don't think I could come up with just six, or maybe, more accurately, I would prefer to see Cyclops, Jean Grey and one other member of the original line-up in whatever group came along.

I believe that Cyclops was and is the best X-Man hands down, as I don't see any leader so integral to the character of his/her team even Captain America. I've always been disappointed that he never seems to have been recognized for how well he fits that role, but the current iteration of the Champions has been illustrating just that quite nicely of late. And his dynamic with Jean has always moved me, even when it got rocky. Whichever other member of the first team came along would be fine, they've all been strong, interesting elements in the mix.

Salty snacks from the Bronze Age : Mrs. Howe's Potato Chips. I think they were a local brand, which makes the memories a sweet and salty blend.

Cyclops
Wolverine
Nightcrawler
Colossus
Storm
Thunderbird

T-Bird was my favorite member of the new X-Men before they killed him off. I thought he was pretty cool. It's a shame we never got to see him develop as a character.

If it was a 7 person roster I would also add Sunfire. I always wondered why they had him leave the team so quickly. I think they could have told some really interesting stories with him.

When I was a kid, the original Taco flavored Doritos were my go to when it came to salty snacks. Too bad they don't make those anymore.

My introduction to the X-Men was the Giant Size issue that reprinted "The Sentinels Live" storyline. Art by Neal Adams. So that's my team:

Cyclops
Marvel Girl
Beast
Angel
Iceman
Havok
& Polaris... (I know, seven but Prof X was dead then).

My favorite salty/savory snack:

Munchos!!!

I don't know what they do to those chips but I love 'em!!!

(The stars say you're my best lover
Matched up like sugar for a cake
They say our love could conquer anything
I'd always hide my feelings
Keep them so cool and so contained
This time it's something I just can't retain

Cos you give me a good vibe don't you know baby
You give me funky love, funky love
Could this be what love's all about baby
Or is it just another dream

Is this for real or is it just another dream
Is this for real or is it just another dream
Is this for real or is it just another dream
Is this for real or is it just another dream

Your voice it calls me everywhere
It haunts my room most everynight
This thing has sure enough got me on the line
No chance for explaination
It seems my heart has led the way
Is this my chance to find mon amour parfait

Cos you give me a good vibe don't you know baby
You give me funky love, funky love
Could this be what love's all about baby
Or is it just another dream

Is this for real or is it just another dream
Is this for real or is it just another dream
Is this for real or is it just another dream
Is this for real or is it just another dream
Love can be so misleading

I'd cross the earth both land and sea
When I feel that moment badgering me
Could be it's just illusion
But in feeling something good indeed
Is this where loving starts to mirror my dreams

Cos you give me a good vibe don't you know baby
You give me funky love, funky love
Could this be what love's all about baby
Or is it just another dream

Is this for real or is it just another dream
Is this for real or is it just another dream
Is this for real or is it just another dream
Is this for real or is it just another dream).

Loved me some Bugles. And William, they still make taco Doritos. But for me, my vice is crunchy Cheetos.

David B., if I'm understanding your question about Iceman correctly, I think Cockrum drew an homage to this scene from X-Men #1, way back in 1963.

As to a 6-member X-Men line-up, I'd like Cyke, Havok, Polaris, Colossus, Storm, and Nightcrawler. I figure Scott and Alex have enough conflict, so I definitely don't need over-exposed Wolverine in the mix. Plus, if no Jean, then less conflict anyway between Scott and Logan.

Like most people here, I prefer the classic lineup: Wolvie, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Storm, Kitty, Rogue, and maybe Cannonball as the seventh member ... or Polaris, possibly.

I love those taco-flavoured chips, though it's been years since I had any. I also liked the Chex Mix (sour cream and onion flavour), and Corn Twists which pretty much melt on your tongue.

Back in the day? Plain ruffles chips. These days, I love sriracha or dill pickle flavor chips.

X-Men? Storm, Kitty, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Wolverine, Rogue

If there must be an X-Men team at all: Nightcrawler, Storm, Colossus, Wolverine, Cyclops, Phoenix.

I don't really like the X-Men, but them is the X-Men, anything else is a pale imitation. Add Kitty Pryde if we get a 7th. No mohawks for Storm.

I don't eat junk food snacks when I read comics.

I like the taco Doritos too but my chip of choice now is the vinegar pringles. I liked funyuns in high school - not sure why now.

My X-Men would be Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Angel, Colossus, Kitty and Polaris. I'd like to see some different interaction with classic characters and Angel never really got the spotlight when added in the "new" days. Definitely with an art team of Byrne and Austin.

Crunchy Cheetos back in the day...... now, it's Zapp's potato chips, preferably the Craw-Tator variety.

My X-Men Dream Team would be a mix of old and new.....Cyclops, Jean Gray, and Iceman from the old, Nightcrawler, Wolverine, and Storm from the new.

I was quite content with the original 5 + Charles X. I was also content with the original 5 Avengers too, a few weeks ago, lol. If I had to have a 6th team mate, I would lean towards Sunfire b/c it could provide for some scenarios for thoughtful writing (non-white, non-American, losing side of WWII, etc.) that could engross adults.

Salty / Savory snacks… hmmm… I wasn’t allowed much of that growing up. But, in elementary school, my mom would pack one of the those “frito-lay” snack packages daily and my preference was for the Bugles, in part b/c we would put them on the ends of our fingers to make claws or just hold them while we munched them.

Nowadays I like those huge Peruvian corn kernels that one can buy at Trader Joe’s.

My worst enemy of my comics was scotch tape on the back of the bags... :(

Hey! I just heard a 30-ish, skinny, white guy, with no facial hair, and with a weird walk, was the bomber of the East Chicago, IN post office a few weeks ago. Penguin???

I'm a big fan of the original five - Cyclops, Beast, Marvel Girl, Angel and Iceman. That's my X-Men.

As for snacks, I grew up loving the Frito. Barbecue chips of any stripe are good too.

Rip Off

I'll stick with Rip on the 'Original Five'..., and thanks Doug for the explanation. I had never seen those panels from the first X-Men issue, so I didn't have any clue as to why they would have had him looking like that, when I had come to recognize all the other members' iconic look so easily.
