Short Cuts: Musical Memories...

Redartz:  Good day, everyone! We have, in previous posts, discussed how certain comics can trigger specific memories of the circumstances in which they were acquired. Well, nothing can match the emotional resonance that music is capable of. So our question today: is there a song that , when you hear it, prompts a particularly unique associated memory?

There are numerous such songs that 'push my keys'. One example for  you: "Magic" by Pilot ("Ho, ho, ho, it's magic!).  When I hear that song, I recall vividly hanging out in my friend's garage in the summer of 1975, helping his mother set up a rummage sale and reading Avengers comics. I can still see that ping-pong table covered with bric-a-brac, and the transistor radio perched on one corner. My  buddy  and I both put some items in that sale, in order to pick up some additional comics funds!  And we both thought that song was great.

Your turn; share a tune and a memory!

Dunno why but every time I hear Peter Cetera's 'Glory of Love' song from the 1986 Karate Kid 2 movie soundtrack I remember that year, just as end of term examinations were going on ...

Driving with the whole family in our yellow station wagon to go see Jaws for the first time. Paul McCartney and Wings had a number one hit that summer, "Listen to What the Man Said" and it played on the radio as I practically sat on my mother's lap (remember those days before bucket seats?) We were all nervous with anticipation of what was heralded as the most nauseating movie of all time. It didn't disappoint, and kept me wary of even going into my pool for a few weeks.

I can close my eyes anytime I hear that song and see my 8 year old self in that front seat, as the golden hour of sunset splashed across the windshield.

There were two sisters who lived opposite me called Louise and Mary-Lynne and they had the single "Ma Baker" by Boney M (summer 1977). They'd put the record on and do a dance to it. They also played "Money, Money, Money" by ABBA quite a lot so those two songs always remind me of Louise and Mary-Lynne (her name sounds like a country singer!)

The song "Summer Nights" from Grease was #1 in the UK for seven weeks and every Thursday the TV channel BBC One had a chart-music show called Top Of The Pops which always ended with the latest #1 hit. During "Summer Nights" there's a bit when Olivia Newton-John falls off the end of a bench and crashes into a bin. Because the song was #1 for 7 weeks that bin moment appeared week after week and I looked forward to it! To this day that scene reminds me of watching Top Of The Pops back in 1978 :)

Any new wave song from 1983 puts me into my senior year in college, notably Human League "Fascination" or Heaven 17 "We don't need no Fascist Groove Thing!" That was a great year.

One song that's tied to a comic book memory is Gary Wright's "Dream Weaver." Any time I hear that song (which isn't often, to be frank), I instantly think of Super Team Family #4. That was playing on the radio the first time I brought that book home and read it.

In the spring of 1980, my parents and I drove from Richmond,VA to Dunedin,Florida. Of course we were popping in and out of range of FM radio stations every 30 minutes or so. I heard Tom Petty's "Refugee" and "Another Brick In The Wall(Part 2)" seemingly every 5 minutes both ways on that trip. To this day, whenever I hear either song, I'm immediately taken back to those many hours spent in the back seat of our Volkswagon Rabbit.

Of course I had several Bronze Age issues of 'Godzilla' and 'Amazing Spider-Man' to kill time with, so I also think of those songs whenever I read those stories.

Thanks for sharing, all!

Mike and J.A.- yes, it seems road trips are effective instigators of such memory associations, probably due to the space and activity limitations involved. And you both have fine songs to trigger those memories!

Colin J- "Summer Nights" hit it bigger in the UK than it did here, but it still had its' impact. Not like your "Top of the Pops" story, but whenever I hear that song I think of my unfortunate experience in a Grease dance contest. Don't ask...

Charlie- 83 was a great year to be in college; I was finishing up that year too. And
"Fascination" was a favorite then and now.

Edo- you get bonus points for tying your memory to a specific comic! Didn't Dr. Strange have an issue with a character by the name of "Dream Weaver"?
