Forget the Beatles and the Stones - which modern singers and bands do you like ?

As far as bands go, I like Cage the Elephant and Portugal the Man. Didn’t think I’d like modern music but i am coming round ...or some bands are starting to feel reminiscent.

I must admit that I don't follow the music charts nowadays so I don't know much about the modern music scene but there are some acts I do like - I think Lorde is amazing and her two albums "Pure Heroine" and "Melodrama" are masterpieces. I'd also recommend the Lumineers - I own both their albums "The Lumineers" (2012) and "Cleopatra" (2016). I also like Imagine Dragons, Twenty-One Pilots and British singer Jake Bugg - he is one day older than Justin Bieber but Jake writes and sings intelligent songs, not tripe for 9 year-old girls like Bieber.

On a completely different subject - Redartz, I know you're interested in fossils so did you hear about the spider with a long tail discovered in a piece of amber 100 million years old ?

And here in the UK the face of "Cheddar Man" has recently been reconstructed. Cheddar Man is a 10,000 year-old skeleton and DNA from his skeleton reveals he had blue eyes and black skin. It was always assumed the first Britons had light skin so the discovery that the oldest residents of this island were black has come as a big surprise!

Colin- yes, that story about the spider is fascinating. We're living in a golden age of paleontological discovery. Another recent case was the discovery of a small dinosaur tail preserved in amber; feathers and all. Truly remarkable.

And to answer your question: there are several, I agree with you on Lorde . I also admire Lana Del Ray, and Adele (for some reason I'm drawn to female singers, most current males leave me yawning). Groups: Of Monsters and Men, Muse, Coldplay and Gorrilaz all have homes on my tablet and phone...

Foster the People, some Katie Perry, some Major Lazer... But nothing in depth or with regularity.

Happy Fat Tuesday all! Here in Chicago land we are all eyeball deep in Polish "cakes / sweet rolls " pronounced as pohnchki. Given there's like 750,000 of Polish decent in Chicago it's really weird this seasonal treat didn't go main stream until a few years ago it seems.

Colin as a kid if there was one book I read over and over and over it was the one in the basement with the pictures of dinosaurs!

I'm a bit fan of the Struts, they play great, catchy guitar rock. I saw them live last October and they put on a great show. Other bands that I like that are still a going concern are Shovels & Rope, Honeyblood and Desperate Journalist, I recommend all their music, but your mileage may vary.

Tedeschi Trucks Band - Derek Trucks is the finest guitarist on the planet and the answer to the Question, "What would Duane Allman sound like if he hadn't died?" This band encompasses everything.....rock and soul, blues and jazz, world and pop. Great live and in studio.

Robert Randolph and the Family Band - Randolph has reintroduced the pedal steel guitar to the rock world and his music combines rock and soul, pop, funk, gospel, and the blues. And he puts on an energetic and enthusiastic show.

I agree with J.A. on the Struts ... great band. Off the top of my head, I also like Pretty Reckless, Pink (unbelievable voice), Brody Dalle (the Distillers are apparently getting back together), and Mobina Galore (a cool Canadian post-punk band). As you can tell, I favour heavier stuff :)

Mike I just have to ask! Punk ended around 1980? What's post Punk?

Charlie: I was using the term as a catch-all to mean "bands since the 70s that have a punkish sound" :)

There is a stricter definition, but I include bands like Green Day, Good Charlotte, Hole, Bif Naked, Jack Off Jill, etc. when I refer to post-punk. I've also heard it called "pop-punk", though most of the stuff I like is hardly pop music!

There are a ton, but I want especially to bring up The Head and the Heart. I first saw them last year at One Big Holiday in Mexico. I knew nothing about them before the show, and was blown away. Great songwriting, great musicianship, awesome live band. Highly recommended.

Define "modern" youngster! If by that you mean since the turn of the century, I'm pretty out of the loop on music. I don't even know the names. Sigh, I'm old.
