'Stumped....' How do folks feel about franchise cross-overs from the last decade or so..?
Trek meets POTA..? Batman '66 meets 'The Avengers' or 'The Man from Uncle'..?
Tripe..? Over-the-top fan fiction or genuinely interesting or wacky ideas..?
Haven't consumed any of it, although I'm particularly interested in the Batman '66 stuff. I know Karen back the BAB had a pretty positive opinion of the Trek meets POTA mini-series. There's also a Wonder Woman '77 meets the Bionic Woman series that came out earlier this year.
I like the fact that this stuff exists, in that it's a lot like the stuff we used to talk about as kids, i.e., "wouldn't it be cool if the (TV) Hulk met the Bionic Man?" Now there's guys making comic books centered around those kinds of flights of pre-adolescent fancy.
However, one that I would have loved, one that my older brother and I used to joke around about back in the late '70s, can never be made: Star Trek meets Star Wars meets Battlestar Galactica, not as a comic book or cartoon, but as a live action mash-up with all of the original actors. We thought it would be so cool to see Spock standing in the bridge of the Galactica, looking at the Deathstar in a viewscreen and saying, "Fascinating!"
Yeah, I haven't read any of them either. I remember the Archie/Punisher crossover back in the early 90s (though I didn't read that one), so it's been around for a while. I guess it's kind of like the Wold-Newton universe, wanting to connect all the cool characters we love.
I just bought the Wonder Woman/Bionic Woman tpb as a present for my wife. The art looks cool but I haven't read it yet.
Back in the day, I did pick up a few of the Amalgam issues. Marvel and DC got together in 96 and 97 to mush their different characters together. I posted the ones I have earlier today so if you're interested, click on my name and they should be there. Some of the "highlights" were The Iron Lantern, The Exciting X-Patrol, Amazon, Magneto and the Magneto Men and, last but not least, The X-Patrol. I don't think there was an issue of The Teen Mutants but I bet they thought about it...
One other crossover I thought was really cool, and I just found out about it recently, was a Magnum PI Murder She Wrote two-parter!!! Magnum gets "framed for a crime he did not commit" and the young lady involved in the crime with him hires her own investigator. Magnum cant' believe it since he's the best crime solver on the island. Little did he know, Jessica Fletcher is in town for some R&R and a lecture... I know! Right?
(High and dry in the long hot day
Lost and lonely in every way
Got the flats all around me sky up above
I need a little water of love
I've been too long lonely and my heart feels pain
Crying out for some soothing rain
I believe I have taken enough
I need a little water of love
Water of love deep in the ground
No water here to be found
Some day baby when the river runs free
It'll carry that water of love to me
There's a bird up in a tree sitting up high
Waiting for me to die
If I don't get some water soon
I'll be dead and gone in the afternoon
Once I had a woman I could call my own
Once I had a woman now my woman is gone
Once there was a river now there's a stone
You know it's evil when you're living alone).
Still want to see that Monkees / Archies comic coming out soon.
I have not collected many crossovers but I can appreciate them if done well. As a kid I always thought the Bradys and Partridges should meet up.
In comics, maybe a Dick Tracy - Batman would be interesting if handled as a true detective yarn. Batman vs Flattop or Pruneface would be fun; they are not that far from his usual rogues gallery.
Mike W.- I loved that Archie/Punisher meeting. Such crossovers hold loads of appeal for this eclectic reader. Liked Green Lantern/ Planet of the Apes. Very recently, I picked up Harley and Ivy meet Betty and Veronica. Enjoyed Future Quest. Always looking forward to seeing what they mash up next...
Oh, yeah, Future Quest. Once the tpbs start showing up on secondary markets (used or remaindered), I'll seriously consider picking up a copy. I love the idea and I've only seen positive reviews of the whole project.
I haven't read any of the recent ones, but now that the GL/POTA mash-up is on my radar, it'll be in the read pile soon.
But one of the older ones that i enjoyed was the Star Trek/X-Men cross-over. It embraced the silliness ("Did he just punch my ship?"), and actually won me over in the silliest way, really. It was when someone walked in (Chapel?) asking for Dr. McCoy, and both Leonard & Hank turn to reply.
Much better than the Martha intersection.
