Sunday Break: Recovery and Reflection

Martinex1: I am tired.  I feel like Bruce Banner after wandering in the wilderness for seven days as the Hulk.

We are taking a Sunday break before kicking off a week of some things new and completely different.

This past week we of course covered the green goliath extensively. Take a look back if you missed any of the conversations.

This past Friday, believe it or not, was our one-hundredth post here on BITBA.   It is hard to believe that we've already hit that milestone.
In the coming months, we plan on sharing more fun concepts, reviews, and conversations.  So tune in regularly.   And if you have an idea for a guest post or just a suggestion for discussion contact us at
backinthebronzeage@gmail.com.  And always feel free to share suggestions and recommendations in the comments every Sunday.

Redartz:  And speaking of new concepts, here's one to ponder: Within the next few weeks, we will debut a new topic header called "Show and Tell". And it will be just what it sounds like: a chance for everyone to show off some of their treasures! A number of commenters have expressed a wish for a way to include photos in the comments, so here's the next best thing. We will give you the topic, in the case of our first edition: Original Art (pages, drawings or sketches you have from a favored artist). There will be at least two weeks until the post appears, giving you fine folks a chance to take a photo or two, and send it to us via the above email address with any comments you have. We will compile the results, and present everyone's images in the post at the appropriate time. At least that is the plan; never let it be said that we here at BitBA aren't willing to try something different!

RECOMMENDATIONS:

Music:  In the 1980s, a band from Marietta, Georgia emerged as a college listening favorite.  Guadalcanal Diary with their album Walking in the Shadow of the Big Man had some entertaining tracks like "Trail of Tears," "Watusi Rodeo" and "Kum-Ba-Yah."   With Murray Attaway (vocals, guitar), Jeff Walls (guitar), Rhett Crowe (bass), and John Poe (drums) - the band was tight and creative with their fast paced jangle.  The album was produced by Don Dixon.  3.5 Bronze Medallions.

Just the one recommendation today - please add your own!  Any category is fair game:  Music, Movies, TV, Books, Comic, and Food.   Cheers all!

Congrats on your 100th post. I'm amazed that people are able to come up with topics so regularly. My blog posts weekly on Fridays, and I'm sometimes into Thursday before coming up with something I think would be interesting enough to discuss online. Keep up the good work. Very entertaining blog you have here.

Speaking of college bands from Georgia, I picked up a copy of an R.E.M. compilation called Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage this week that collects their highlights from beginning to end. R.E.M. was the bee's knees when I was in college, and hit their commercial stride not long after, but I actually lost track of them after the early 90's for the most part, so this was nice to have.

Since it is Sunday, and Sundays have long been recognized as a time for "giving thanks." I'd like to thank the following (in no particular order):

1) Glen for reporting when Hulk said "Bah" and "Puny" in the first sentence. (Now if we could find "Bah, puny humans, Hulk Smash!"

2) Edo for referring the work of Joe SWacco and "Safe Area Gorazde" which is the true story about a moslem enclave surviving being surrounded by Serbians and Serbian militias in Bosnia during the war in the 90s.

3) Brian, Brian, and Steve does Comics for last weeks discussion on New Wave and Sheffield, England. Legal action is being filed against me by my office colleagues and wife and kids for obsessively playing HUman League's "Love Action"and Heaven 17's "Come Live with Me" this past week.

4) And of course this most entertaining blog and Marti and Red who take the time to do it.

5) And many of you who have answered my various queries! Cheers!

Thank you Charlie Horse 47. We are glad you joined us here. It is a great little community. And likewise I learned from you about Tarzan Boy which I had never heard - it must have fallen into some gap of my radio listening. More music posts to come...so more songs to drive your family wild with...stay tuned. Cheers!

Marti - For what it's worth, Graham Crackers COmics is having their annual $1-back-issue blow out today for current comics. I stopped in a picked up a DD (something I could do 1-and-out with) yesterday. Trades maybe half off too. I think they have a store by you? Off to play two hours of soccer... Cheers!

Hello, Bronze Backers. I have a recommendation for you. It's a mini-series called TABOO starring Tom Hardy. I'm an American living in Scotland so I won't be able to tell my fellow Yanks where you might see this in the States, but over here it's been airing on the BBC. It can be viewed on demand on the BBC iPlayer. Keep an eye out for it stateside, fellas.

TABOO tells the tale of a mysterious English adventurer named James Keziah Delaney. He's been off in darkest Africa getting in all sorts of nefarious situations and his reputation precedes him. It's 1814 and he's just returned to England to attend to the death of his father. Delaney sets all sorts of powerful forces in motion (The East India Trading Company, The Crown, U.S. spies) as he presses his claim for a valuable piece of land on the west coast of America.

I think you guys will appreciate TABOO for the same reasons I do: it's dark, pulpy fun. It reminds me of both The Shadow and Batman in various ways (I won't say how. You'll see.) and it never takes itself too seriously. Although, beware, it offers plenty of nasty thrills. Tom Hardy is a hoot as the menacing, brooding bad-ass who strides the London streets stirring up all kinds of trouble. His supporting cast is aces and the primary villain is played by the great Jonathan Pryce.

I'm having such fun with TABOO. I hope you guys will too. Cheers!
