The Sunday Also Rises!

Martinex1: What a great week we had at BitBA!   Thank you for participating in the conversation this week and we hope the coming days are just as enjoyable.   So let's get started  with the Sunday comic section:

THIS PAST WEEK:  This was one of the most successful weeks for our site with a review of Gene Colan's work, a Follow The Leader classical music discussion, our first guest post (from Steve, Colin, and Colin) about Marvel UK, a short conversation about autographs, a sampling of cereal premiums, and a review of "Flight of the Dragons."  We appreciate all of the comments and views.  Here are a couple of bonus follow ups to our posts this week:
As mentioned, Gene Colan did pencil some Archie in the 90s!

And here are some discontinued cereals that may tickle your memory cells:

COMING SOON:  This week is going to be great too.  Monday we will have a conversation about Comic Book Sidekicks that we have been promising following a great suggestion.  Tuesday you can expect another episode of Follow the Leader.  Wednesday we will explore another theme in The Quarter Bin.  Later in the week, we will look at pinbacks and take a ride on the Retro Metro.  Plus more, more, and more!   Who says this isn't the place for positive posts?

RECOMMENDATIONS:  Get outside!  Spring has sprung!  It is 70 degrees today and partly sunny!  The blooms ate bloomin' and unfortunately the Sox are losing.  5 Bronze Medallions for the best time of the year!

Good Day!

Today is Palm Sunday. Keeping with the spirit BitBA and reflecting back on popular music from our youth, I did a quick Google on the musical Jesus Christ Superstar, since many of the songs (Andrew Lloyd Weber) were extremely popular and to this day they still bounce around in my head!

The album was # 1 for a few months in 1971, and #1 overall for that year, in the USA, Also very popular in Australia. (Seems the BBC banned airplay for a period of time, so I wonder if our UK friends are familiar with it?)

The single “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” was simultaneously (?) released by two singers. Yvonne Elliman's went to # 28 and Helen Reddy’s version went to # 13. The single “Everything’s Alright” reached # 92.

And from the musical Godspell, the single “Day by Day” reached # 13 in the USA and #1 in Oz. (I play this occasionally on my Uke but never tried the others.)

Perhaps the most interesting tidbit I came across was that Yvonne Elliman was quite confused initially, when reading the lyrics to “I Don’t Know How to Love Him.” She thought the song was to be from the perspective of Mary the mother of Jesus, not Mary Magdalene.

I was fortunate that my parents took us to the Chicago musical of JCS. Never saw Godspell. I’ve tried watching both as movies, but too stylistic for my tastes.

Anyone else see the movies or enjoy the music?

Cheers All! (Someone told me they saw Quisp cereal for sale in Target. I'll try to check that out!)

Hey Charlie, Jesus Christ Superstar was one of the first movies I remember seeing in the theatre as a kid. The music made a big impression on me, and today my band plays What's the Buzz at our gigs. I think we must be one of the only bands to cover that tune, but it's super funky and the crowds get a kick out of it.

I saw the movie probably 20-25 times growing up, great music and I like the visuals, dancing, all of it-- Norman Jewison did a super interpretation in my view. I still haven't seen it live. I heard Ted Neely from the movie was still playing Jesus in the live version for decades after the movie, and that he loved it, said all the good vibes he got from audiences over the years were fantastic.

I tried watching the movie Godspell, hoping it'd be like JCSuperstar, but I couldn't stand it. Didn't have that funky wild vibe at all. On a side note, I also liked Jewison's film In the Heat of the Night very much.

Here's What's the Buzz in all it's funky glory in the movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVz11jmG3ac
I grew up Roman Catholic, and music was always my favorite part of the mass. I'm not religious anymore, but the music of JCSuperstar has stayed with me and continues to inspire.

Don't worry, Charlie, "Jesus Christ Superstar," is very well-known in Britain. Every time the BBC bans anything, it just makes it more famous.

I can't really say much about the film. I tried to watch it once but people in it kept singing and it put me off. I know people are supposed to sing in musicals but I still found it strangely off-putting.

For years, every time Tim Rice appeared on a UK chat show, he'd claim that, "I Don't Know How to Love Him," was originally called, "I Love A Kansas Morning," before he decided to rewrite it for the musical. I suspect that Yvonne Elliman would have been even more confused it he'd got her to sing that instead.

Garett - I like your taste in music!

"What's the Buzz" is indeed a fav from that! ANd, somewhere or another I actually heard that being played by a band or in a tv show or something... and I was quite surprised.

The dude who stole the show/musical, as a I remember 46 years ago, was Pontius Pilate. Not sure who played him. His song was vaudeville-like (So you are the Christ, Mister great Jesus Christ, prove to me that your divine, change this water into wine...)

As far as the album is concerned, I prefer the London Concept Release in 1971. There is another "offical" album from like 1973, but I grew up with, and prefer the guitars, vocals, etc. from 71 album. (I have to assume this is the version that dominated the charts?)

I'll have to see the movie again. And I think you are spot on... Godspell is perhaps what I just did not have interest in watching whereas JCS did keep my attention.

A band called "Thermadore" from the mid 90s on their album "Monkey on Rico" played "Everything's Alright" as their final track. It is one of my favorite versions of the song from JCS. Rain Phoenix sings this version: I believe she is related to River and Joaquin Phoenix. Great song.
