The Brave Or The Bold: The Shaved Or The Bald!

Martinex1:  Who is the target audience for comic books?  I contend it is middle-aged men who are going bald.   If I may make my case just take a look at the many pictures below.   Who else could they be appealing to other than the follicle-challenged?   At the very least, I am glad I am not alone in the balding category.  There are countless examples of heroes, villains, and hangers-on, who have been bald.

Whether in comics, on television, in movies, or with advertisements, bald is beautiful.

But my questions to you are (across all genres):
  1. Who are the five best bald characters?
  2. Who are the five worst bald characters?
  3. Why are there so many bald characters?
  4. Can you name all of the characters depicted below?
  5. We've captured everybody from the Absorbing Man to Zarrko the Tomorrow Man, but what bald characters did we miss?
Have a fun  Monday!  Best to all BitBA fans out there!  May you all have a full heart and a full head of hair!

Even nature knows it is cool!

Fearsome garb...indeed!

You say he is not bald.  I say he is Balder!

In my opinion, one of the best super-heroines in comic history!

That is not hair on his forehead; Lucy just used a Sharpee marker while he slept!

You may not have thought about it, but the Thing would have looked terrible with hair!

Yes... the Silver Surfer  and his arch-nemesis Mephisto!

1. Who are the five best bald characters?

Thing, Capt. Picard, Moondragon (what can I say? I like her), Ruby Thursday, Vulture

2. Who are the five worst bald characters?

Mr. Slate (never gives Fred a break), Nikita Khrushchev, and three of Mole Man's Moloids (they're real jerks, they always steal everyone else's snacks from the fridge in the staff lunchroom)

3. Why are there so many bald characters?

They're easy to draw.

4. Can you name all of the characters depicted below?

About 95% of them; I was, by the way, a bit taken aback by the fifth photo, just below Ilia and Voldemort - I never knew Clint Eastwood had shaved off all of his hair...

5. We've captured everybody from the Absorbing Man to Zarrko the Tomorrow Man, but what bald characters did we miss?

Funky Flashman

Who are the five worst bald characters?
Bullseye in the DD movie
Can't think of any others of the top of my (not bald) head.
Why are there so many bald characters?
What Edo said, easy to draw.

Well, you forgot Basil Elks, AKA Basilisk, who fought Spider-Man and Thing in the Bronze Age. As a kid, he was one of my favorites, since I was a big fan of any reptile-based villain. I was somewhat sad to see him get whacked by Scourge. Now I think he's sort of silly.

I don't know about the five best, but I'd definitely put Moondragon (or Madame McEvil as she was originally called) among them. And I'd also definitely put Gargoyle as one of the worst. There were a couple of Rom stories with Gargoyle and Quasimodo that weren't bad, but all the same...

As for the missing, I would nominate Warlord Kro, Thanos (when he's not wearing the mask), Puppet Master, the Abomination, Nuklo, Nebula (in the movies), the Freak, the Executioner, Kilowog, and that's just off the top of my head! (Cue rimshot)

Can't really argue with J.A. Morris aside from replacing Absorbing Man with the Silver Surfer.

Who are the five worst bald characters?

Zarrko the Tomorrow Man

Superboy - specifically a SA story in which krypotonite causes all his hair to fall out. Superboy then spends the entire story trying to hide his baldness and protect his secret identity (Clark's hair has obviously fallen out too) His tricks include using heat vision to burn the fur off a cat and before placing the fur on his head. Aw, who am I kidding, I love that story :)

Why are there so many bald characters?

In the case of villains and aliens perhaps it was to do with a sense of 'difference' for back-in-the-day young hirsute readers to pick up on, subliminally or otherwise. Randomly I would add, in the SA in particular perhaps children had younger parents than these days and they came across baldness/hair loss less often. Or something.

Can you name all of the characters depicted below?

Most but not all. My wider pop culture knowledge isn't as strong as most here.

We've captured everybody from the Absorbing Man to Zarrko the Tomorrow Man, but what bald characters did we miss?

Pluto
The Mekon (one for fans of the UK Eagle comic)
Brian Michael Bendis

Questions 1: Five best bald characters. (I'm sticking with comic books only):
1. Lex Luthor (because originally he was kind of defined by his baldness, so much so that going bald actually turned him evil).
2. Professor X
3. The Kingpin
4. The Absorbing Man
5. The Watcher

Question 2: Five worst:
Actually I can't really think of any that were all that bad.

Question 3: Why are there so many bald characters?
Because artists don't like to draw hair.

Question 4: Can you name all of the characters depicted below?
Pretty much. But I don't want to. LOL

Question 5: Did we miss anyone?
Can't think of anyone at the moment.

Wait, I think you missed The Vanisher on that list.

1) Best:

-Moondragon (one of my favorites!)
-Luthor
-Professor X
-Mister Freeze
-Dr. Sivana

2) Worst, I'll have to pass on, I'm drawing a major blank!

3) Yet another vote for easy to draw

4) Most, missed a few

5) Unless I missed them earlier, I will add Chameleon Boy, Martian Manhunter, and I mentioned him earlier, Dr. Sivana.

I always thought Moondragon was an interesting character too, though her attitude gets on my nerves sometimes. I also like Vulture, Professor X, and Scorpion (Mac Gargan).

As for ones you missed, I was thinking of Sivana too, but Ewan beat me to it; what about Brainwave (the original one)? Or Dale Gunn from the Detroit Justice League? (Yeah, I'm kinda reaching there, I know.)And I think both Cobra and Sidewinder (of Serpent Society fame) are bald under their masks. Hey, Bushmaster's bald too ... maybe it's a prerequisite for joining the society?

Oh, and you got the Vincent Price version of Egghead, but what about the Masters of Evil version?

Who are the five worst bald characters?

There are no bad characters -- bald or otherwise.

Why are there so many bald characters?

Easier to draw.

Can you name all of the characters depicted below?

No. I recognize them all, but the names not so much.

Across all genres, my favs are:

Hot Stuff, Silver Surfer, Kojak, Kingpin, and the brain maniac Braniac.

I have to stop there... dinners calling!

Cheers!

Best:

Dr Bunsen Honeydew!!! A scientist who truly works for the betterment of mankind and has no agenda to promote...

That's pretty much the list. Who else can stand in the presence of that man...

Worst:

My first reaction is The Vulture. Just never liked that guy. HOWEVER, upon further review, Bald Luke Cage. Sweet Christmas, Luke should have hair and a solid silver tiara.

One's you missed:

TV's Lex Luther, Michael Rosenbaum.

That albino dude, Powder.

Maybe I missed it because I didn't keep both eyes open, but Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury? I would have thought he would have made the list...

Too many favorites! I never thought about how many outstanding characters were bald. This post was an eye-opener!

But to name a few close to my heart: Homer Simpson, Beldar Conehead , Kingpin, Silver Surfer, and Eleven (from "Stranger Things", mostly bald anyway)

I also love Puck, Martinez, and Brainiac. In the non-comics division, Captain Picard, Kojak, Charlie Brown, and Ziggy are all cool

Who are the five worst bald characters?
I don't know.

Why are there so many bald characters?
I'll go with the easy to draw thing, too.

Can you name all of the characters depicted below?
Most, but not all.

You probably missed somebody, but don't ask me, You've captured fictional baldness rather well, I would say.
