Two Questions: Secret Places and Bedtime Snacks...

Redartz: Hi folks! Today we have two questions which involve revealing, perhaps, a bit of secret information. Private stuff, very  hush-hush. To be specific:

1. When you were young, did you have a 'secret place'! That is, a special spot that you felt comfortable in, a place you could retreat to when you needed some privacy or just some thinking time.

2.  What guilty pleasures do you enjoy as an evening, or bedtime, snack?

I will share first, to reassure the reticent!

Question 1: Yes, I did have a personal spot. In our town there was a small park along the river, replete with a swingset, teeter/totter and the usual kiddy attractions. It also had a nice walking trail that wound along the riverfront. This particular park had some history for me- my parents brought me there to play as a youngster. Thus this park had a warm place in my memory, and it still does. For a public park, it never attracted too many people; so it made a fine place to take a solitary walk and listen to the water. Sometimes I'd take some comics and read them under a tree. And every once in awhile, when nobody was around, I'd take a turn on the swings. Just for kicks, you know.

The park is great in winter, too...

Question 2:  My wife and I nearly always enjoy a bit of dessert before retiring; a dish of ice cream, or perhaps a few cookies and some milk (my perennial favorite; Sesame Street's "Cookie Monster" could have been modeled after me}. And we keep a can of nuts on the bedstand; makes a tasty nibble if you crave something salty. I go for peanuts and cashews, but my better half has dibs on walnuts...

Okay, that wasn't too painful (well, it may have been for  you, but not so much for me). Here's the podium; your turn to share!

1) Not secret, but my father had a shed in the back garden and I used to read comics in there.

2) I don't eat or drink anything after 6pm.

Where I grew up in its entirety, among the sand dunes of Lake Michigan, was a "secret place." Hard to believe that among the largest steel mills in the world, this refuge of sand, grasses, beach, etc. existed. I would walk through dunes / woods to get to school. But we always "dreamed" that among all this there was a Shangri-La: a pond, of pure water, with animals around it, that we would find one day.

Dudes, I'm 56. No late night snacks! Though, I used to be a die-hard 2-bowl cereal eater from age 4 until 55 just before bed. That was a bit rough to stop. I had to change to oatmeal (to keep the milk/grain-carb thing going I guess) then finally weaned off the oatmeal.

Have a great day all! ANyone seeing DUnkirk?

1) Not entirely secret, but pretty secluded: the hayloft of our barn (my dad used to like raising sheep and sometimes cows). I used to move a few bales around it to make an easy chair and then read books and comics there. Lots of peace, quiet and privacy. I especially liked it on rainy days, a pretty common feature of growing up in Oregon, with the soothing sound of the rain pattering on the roof - I dozed off more than once like that...

2) I try to avoid eating later in the evening.

1) No secret places, though as I kid I'd hide under the desk in my bedroom and would sometimes lay a piece of cardboard to block off view.

2) I eat whatever I can find in the evening: chips, candy, crackers, cookies. . . It is partly for that reason I try not to keep too much of that around (but I also don't actively avoid it either). Sometimes I make one-ingredient banana ice cream for me and the wife while we are watching a TV show in the evening.

You guys are making me feel like I am doing something wrong by eating a late snack, but I am a firm believer of ALL THINGS in moderation, including sometimes, moderation itself.

Dr. O what you say is interesting...

I wake up this morning and my wife is listening to a show.

The Doctor says when he recommends to people to eat a vegetable/grain/fruit based diet that "patients thing that is really weird."

The doctor replies by telling his patients "I think it is weird to eat a lot of meat and refined carbs and then when you are 50 - 60 to be laid out naked and unconscious with your arms spread out like you are being crucified, have a circular saw cut through your sternum and ribs, to make your heart available and remove a hunk of clogged artery. Or, I cut into your neck to remove a length of clogged artery. Then, I cut into your leg or arm and remove a hunk of clean artery so I can add it to your heart or neck."

I think the Doc has a point. I had oatmeal for breakfast, LOL.

Well, I guess I was a little terse in my answer to question b) - I said I "try to" not eat later in the evening; I don't always succeed. However, as per the original post, when I *do* find myself a bit too peckish to resist snacking in the evening, there's no specific food/snack that I go to. Kind of like Osvaldo, I'll just forage for whatever's around. And I try to keep it healthy even then. For example, it's late evening here, and I just ate a big, thick hunk of watermelon - ice-cold straight from the fridge, which really hit the spot, as we've been having a bit of a heatwave here lately, with record temps and the usual swamp-like humidity.

Like Dr. O, I'm feeling a bit out on the limb :)! But like Osvaldo, I follow 'moderation in all things'. I possibly consume a few too many snacks, but I try o balance it- yogurt and fiber cereal for breakfast, limited red meat, frequent fish. But I just gotta have those bedtime cookies n milk...

Edo- that barn loft, with the rain patterning, sounds very pleasant indeed.

M.P.- just don't let them find you stretched out "with a handful of Pringles potato chips and a Ding Dong" by your head...

1) When I was young I used to go into the garage and sit in my dad's '49 Chevy. There, I would create stories involving super heroes (which I was one of).
Now I take walks 2 or 3 times a week on the trails in Lake Erie metro park.

2) Probably 4 or 5 times a week I'll get a bedtime snack. I'm not a big milk drinker but nothing goes better with a couple of chocolate chip cookies.

1. We lived in the backwoods of Kentucky and to get away I often took a hike to the top of one of the many hills behind the house where I could just get some quiet and time to reflect. With lots of siblings it was important. While I didn't really take comics to read, I'd often concoct letters to editors in my head or fabricate some new plot lines I'd like to see. I imagined an Avengers led by Hawkeye before the WCA and concocted new adventures for Timely's Big Three before The Invaders came along.

2. They don't make them anymore, but I loved Penrose Hot sausages with a little cheddar cheese and some saltine crackers. This wasn't really a bedtime snack, but I dearly loved 'em.

1) Upstairs loft where rarely anyone else ventures. It gets afternoon sun which is perfect for a stealth winters nap on a Sunday afternoon.

2) McDonald's cheeseburgers. That taste brings me back to the bronze age immediately!
Backup snack is crackers and cheese.
