How do you listen to music now?

With the evolution of formats and delivery channels: from 45s, LPs, cassettes, CDs then radio stations to streaming services like Pandora, Spotify, satellite radio like SiriusXM, etc. I don't know about you guys but I can't keep up. And curmudgeonly me doesn't really want to.

I had a lot of effort and $ invested in albums in the 70s and 80s. Then I remember trying to figure out what to do when CDs became the current format. Do I buy all of my old albums all over again??? Not practical really. So I bought a lot of greatest hits on CD. Now I have a great deal of my CDs ripped to my iPhone (first iPod) with a smattering of songs I've purchased from the iTunes store. I am greatly resisting paying a monthly fee for any sort of streaming service. There's something about owning my own music, even if virtually. But, I don't like being joined at the hip with Apple. Not sure what to do about that.

But, more than anything I find myself listing to a local FM oldies/top 40/classic rock station. It just sort of plays in the background - like a soundtrack of my life.

I have a CD player in my car and I still buy new discs occasionally. But for new music, I generally just download it and listen on my iPod. Sometimes when I'm working on a review for one of my blogs, I play music through the computer. I'd say it's mostly still CDs for me, I've yet to subscribe to anything like satellite radio.

I love satellite radio for the variety. I'll buy a CD from a band if I see them live.

Record stores are booming now, and I heard there's a new "portable cassette player" available-- a new Walkman!

I haven't bought music in any form in many years. If I need a fix I use YouTube in the house or car. Still occasionally listen to a record or cd. Otherwise just listen to ME FM in Chicago which mostly is 50-70s.

iPod.

I downloaded all my CDs to my computer years ago and then sold them all. (They were taking up a lot of room).

I find it pretty convenient that you can have your entire music collection on something as big as a credit card that will fit in your pocket so you can take it with you anywhere.

So, it seemed crazy to have to store a bunch a CDs.

While driving it's "classic" rock (oh, how much I hate to say that) station that plays "70's-'80's. I had Sirius free for a couple of months and loved it, I won't pay for it though.

I haven't bought any CD's in a few years but do have quite a few. When the commercials start to drive me nuts I'll pop one in.

While at home I'll listen thru the computer.

Back in the day I had plenty of albums and literally hundreds of cassettes. Blasting them while cruisin' the neighborhood with my buds was a summer ritual.
Ahh the memories.

Ok, I'm all over the place on this one.

I used to have hundreds of lp's, converted them to mp3 and loaded them on the computer. Sold them all, except for some that went to my nephew who is heavily into vinyl. Still have countless cd's, and occasionally buy one. Also buy off ITunes. Have loaded most of my music on the phone and tablet, for portability. My wife has Sirius XM in her car, I like to listen to the 70's channel when they replay Casey Kasem and American Top 40.

Also listen frequently to YouTube. All that said- last week I bought a 1970 vintage radio at an auction, because I like to listen to radio using an analog dial for tuning. And this particular radio carries 5 bands, the other night I listened to Japanese folk music on Short Wave.

Mostly CDs (I have lots of "custom made" mix CDs), and sometimes I'll just listen to stuff online.

Same as always.....with my ears.

I have a bunch of CDs, I mean a bunch. I've reviewed CDs for almost 18 years, so I get a lot via mail. I have also accumulated a good stack of others. I listen to all different styles of music, from jazz to rock to R&B to blues over a long period of time

I also have an old iPod classic that I got from my brother a few years ago and I've ripped a lot of my CDs to it, about 9,000 songs. I use it when I'm walking or exercising or working in the yard. Those are a major step up from the old Walkman days.

I hate to admit that I don't know how to load an iPod. Never had one. Still listen to occasional cds but mostly FM radio on my drive to and from work. I'm stuck in the Bronze Age on this one, and admittedly not in a good way.

I have an MP3 player that I inherited from my daughter when she got an IPod many years ago, but I don't know how to do much more than turn it on and off. I listen to it only when I mow the yard once a week or so for two-thirds of the year. Most of time I listen to music on CD in the car and recently had to buy a new car and made sure it still had a CD player in it, a feature they tell me is slowly going away.

I had a great iPod Classic for both my deployments, but since it's been no longer supported I had to move to a newer iPod, still haven't quite used to it.., I've got to take it off sync, because it removes what I had if I no longer have it on my laptop iTunes, etc.... annoying.

I'm headin' to Jersey for a 3-day Space:1999 con, so in the rental car, I'll just have that and my CD's..

I mostly listen to podcasts: ambient music and jazz, plus some oddball stuff (like Do or DIY and The Eternal Now, both from WFMU) and an eclectic show out of England called Ship Full of Bombs. Warren Ellis is a good source for recommendations on these.

I also have a custom RSS feed from Pinboard with items tagged "music." I get quite a few gems that way.

For albums, I stream mostly off of Google Music and have a small but growing vinyl record collection, a mix of Vinyl Me Please picks of the month, used record shop finds and one-offs mostly bought at concerts.

I, too, am all over the place on this.

I still buy CDs fairly regularly. I call it getting in early on the vintage CD collector scene. ;)

I like to be able to browse them all when choosing what to put in the 5-disc changer/DVD player in the living room.

I also have ripped nearly all of these (closing in on 500) and add them to my iPod classic (so sad iPods have been discontinued - I don't want to put music on my phone - kills the battery life).

I also have a small but substantial vinyl collection from my DJing days, but no longer have a working turntable. When my wife and I move to a house it will be one of my first purchases (a pair of them actually), but right now we don't have room for them.

I don't use (or like) streaming services (I don't want to pay for it - I've already paid for the CD or vinyl! - and want to choose exactly what I listen to when I want to listen to it), but will use You Tube when there is one song I want to hear.

I'm almost exclusively streaming these days. I still have my CD and vinyl collection, but the convenience and variety of Apple or Spotify is what wins out for me. Along with podcasts, they also give me a place to discover new music.

I still buy the occasional CD or album, especially when at a live show and supporting smaller bands/artists.
