Chew the Fat: Avengers: Infinity War - 1st Impressions!

Martinex1: The biggest movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe made its way to the silver screen this weekend and it seems to be a hit all over the world.  Avengers: Infinity War launched in the U.S. in over 4400 theaters, and it seems that millions flocked to the movies as the film is already setting some records and challenging the Star Wars flicks and Black Panther for overall ticket domination.

So what did you think?  Keep it SPOILER FREE - but give us your first impressions of the movie, the acting, the plot, the characters, and the direction.  Rank the film among the rest of the Marvel movies.  Did it live up to your expectations, exceed them, or not quite make the cut?  Do you continue to be impressed with Marvel on the screen, or do you see cracks in the technique?   Picks or pans? Rave reviews or cautious recommendations?  Thumbs up or thumbs down? Does Marvel continue to dominate the superhero genre?   Do the characters stay in sync or stray from source material?  Does Thanos as a villainous cornerstone live up to the hype and years of build up? What characters stole the show? Are you excited for the next steps or simply fatigued?

And remember - many of us have seen it but definitely others have not - so please keep the spoilers to yourself!  Surely there is much to critique and comment upon without giving away clues and key plot points.  We know that the movie contains just about every Marvel character who had been in a previous film and we know the big-bad is Thanos...but we may not know the specifics and resolution so be cautious. You can tell us if it lived up to your expectations and if characters left their mark and if it was exciting and if you would see it again or save your money!  First impressions start here...

It was beautiful, exhausting, a veritable tour-de-force of action and ensemble filmmaking. The ending is not unknown for readers of the Gauntlet books, but was pulled off so dramatically affecting that the crowd filed out in near silence. The sub-plots all work, the interchange is so tight....no wonder, since this is the creative team that made the best MCU film, CA: Winter Soldier.

Thanos totally worked, the CGI was among the best ever done for a character, and his motivation was clear and had a valid POV. The surprise of the Blank Blank showing up was indicative of the long-form story-telling that Marvel Studios has invested in.

To say I have been waiting 41 years since Avengers Annual #7 to see this is no understatement.

Meh - too many superheroes spoil the movie.

As the credits ended and the lights came on in the theater, I whispered to my wife "they did it." "They" being the Russo Brothers and everyone else on the creative team. They pulled it off, they wrote a 2 hour 40 minute thank you note for all the fans who've seen every movie (and in some cases, obsessed over every movie). More importantly it was very good, entertaining from start to finish.

Can't say much more without spoiling it.

Fantastic film. So much fun. My sons and I have been talking about it since seeing it. It did not play long - every minute was maximized, and there were enough "oh, wow!" and "waitaminute" moments to keep the attention riveted.

I love Captain America as portrayed by Chris Evans. He will forever wear that as Christopher Reeve continues to be our Superman.

More whenever the Spoil It! post comes along.

Just saw it this afternoon. Amazing, it blew me away. Truly jam-packed. I don't know how they could have put anything more into it! Plenty of humor and heart. Hard to say much more without spoiling...

"A famous man once said, 'I got nothing.' Who said that? What does that even mean? Didn't matter. I said it 'cause he said it. So now, he was famous and it was basically said by two well-known guys. I don't... uhh... I'm gonna start again."

I'll see it this Friday... Can't.Hardly.Wait.

(Watch out, you might get what you're after
Cool babies, strange but not a stranger
I'm an ordinary guy
Burning down the house

Hold tight
Wait 'til the party's over
Hold tight
We're in for nasty weather
There has got to be a way
Burning down the house

Here's your ticket pack your bags
Time for jumpin' overboard
The transportation is here
Close enough but not too far,
Maybe you know where you are
Fightin' fire with fire

All wet, hey, you might need a raincoat
Shakedown, dreams walking in broad daylight
Three hundred sixty five degrees
Burning down the house

It was once upon a place,
Sometimes I listen to myself
Gonna come in first place
People on their way to work,
Baby, what did you expect?
Gonna burst into flame

Burning down the house

My house's out of the ordinary
That's right
Don't want to hurt nobody
Some things sure can sweep me off my feet
Burning down the house

No visible means of support
And you have not seen nothin' yet
Everything's stuck together
And I don't know what you expect
Staring into the TV set
Fighting fire with fire).

I loved it. It had its issues, but nothing that undermined its overall effect, which was relentless, fun, moving, chaotic. I saw it with a VERY engaged crowed, which I think made the film about 35% better, and I am even considering doing what I haven't done with any Marvel movie (but do regularly with Star Wars movies). .. see it again in the theater.

I went in with a a friend of mine, who has never read any Marvel comics and hasn't seen any of the MCU movies before and with a 30 min introduction before the movie at my home, she was able to follow and enjoy the movie. I think that says something about, how well made this movie was. About 20 important characters in a huge choreography spanning multiple planets and still a total newcomer to the genre could understand and enjoy! Great work!

From Terry in Virginia:

Ten thumbs up!

Just saw it tonight, May 5. A general impression: they really pulled it off, with that vast cast of characters each having plenty of screen time and relevance to the overall story. Another broad observation: while there was still a good share of humor, I was very glad that it didn't go the route of Thor: Ragnarok, which, while it had many enjoyable parts, played too much of the campy comedy angle. Infinity War takes itself seriously. And as someone who knows a lot of the source material, I was surprised where the writers, producers, and director went with this. Bold move!

When the no-spoiler embargo ends, I may want to say more. Meantime, I'll very likely see it the theater again before adding it to my DVD collection.

Totally satisfied! Since the first tease of Thanos in the post-credits scene of the first Avengers movie in 2012, I've been looking forward to this. I feel that Marvel Studios just nailed the landing!
