Two Questions: Comics Spending and Cross-Company Blending

Redartz:  Hello all! Here's a couple quick questions to light the fires of conversation today.

1. What is the most you've ever spent for a single comic? And yes, Osvaldo, you've mentioned your 5 dollar limit; but have you ever exceeded that?

2. These days meetings between characters from other companies, even other media, have become a hot item ( think Star Trek/Planet of the Apes, Scooby Doo and Harley Quinn). Name a comics character crossover combo (oh, I love alliteration) that you'd like to see; one that hasn't been tried yet. Marvel, DC, Archie, Image, Harvey, Charlton; any company past or present is fair game. Let's throw it wide open!

First, my answers:

1. About 20 years ago I spent 45 dollars on a nice, sharp copy of Fantastic Four 45 (first appearance of the Inhumans). Ended up selling it not long ago for quite a bit more than that; enabling me to keep the comic for reading in the form of the Fantastic Four Omnibus. Mostly I get my books from flea markets, but will occasionally the pay the premium for better books. Especially at conventions.

2. So many choices...but I'll go with some kids. Sugar and Spike meet Little Archie. I don't think Archie and his pals would stand a chance against the torrid twosome.

All right, the podium is all yours! Weall await your answers...

Hi All,

1) Yers truly did spend around $75 for an issue of Master Comics. Early 1940s Fawcett, Cpt Marvel Jr., Mac Raboy cover as I recall, fighting Nazis. (I'm a sucker for WWII patriotic covers!)

2) I'd love to see Sad Sack cross over into the DC or Marvel world of WWII comics. Though, given DC's Sgt. Rock was more serious than Marvel's Sgt Fury, who was more a swash buckler, wise cracker, it might be more humorous to see the Sack aside Fury than Rock?

Off to the grind!

1. I spent $600 on an original copy of Amazing Fantasy #15 back in 1987. It was a copy that had been restored to Very Good - Fine condition (never had it professionally graded), and I sold it in 2013 for around $5,000, so it wasn't a bad investment.

2. How about Dragon Ball Z vs. The Justice League or the Avengers. That would be pretty cool.

1) I picked up Strange Tales 126 (I think I mentioned it before) for $100. It's in pretty good shape and I knew the dealer so he gave me a great price (it was marked for $300).

2) This was a fun exercise. Definitely would like to see FF and the Herculoids and, this is from left field, Dr. Doom in the Land of the Lost.

1) I don't think I've ever spent more than $20. Fortunately, I collected most of the silver age during the mid-'70s and was able to get most Marvel runs for much less than that. The $20 was spent on a very clean FN+ Daredevil #1 in the late 1980s. Still have it, so don't know the return value.

2) I would love to see a full series where the FF and Jonny Quest team up. I think the scientific/imaginaut aspect of both teams would be perfect. Would also enjoy seeing Dr. Zin and Doctor Doom try to team up. I think the downtime of the teams together would be loads of fun, too, as both have enjoyed playing with their hi-tech toys in between adventures.

1) Even Osvaldo's $5 dollar rule is too much for me, if we're talking about an individual issue. (When I buy floppies, which is not that often, I try to work it out so that together with shipping costs, the price per individual issue is never more than about $2.00/2.50.)
The only time I broke that rule is a few years ago, when a comics seller here in Zagreb somehow got a hold of Not Brand Echh #9 and Nick Fury #3 (from 1968, by Steranko) and sold them to me for the equivalent of about $4.50 each. I thought that was a pretty good deal.

2) I know the Green Hornet and Kato have been crossed over with Batman in the '60s TV show, and more recently in the Batman '66 comics, but given that he's a hero that pretends to be a criminal, I think it would have been cool to have him crossover into the Marvel U., and interact with, say, Spider-man, Power Man & Iron Fist, Shang Chi, Spiderwoman, Moon Knight...

I don't think I've ever gone much over $20 for a comic. If something's too expensive, I'll either go digital or get a reprint.

Has there ever been a Conan/Warlord crossover? That'd be cool. Punisher/Jon Sable might be interesting too, since the characters have some similarities, but plenty more differences.

As I've mentioned before, much of my collection was acquired when local Mom & Pop shops were going out of business. I can't even go by "sticker price" because I either worked for boxes or bought the box in bulk. I think I may have once paid over $10 dollars for a Marvel Triple Action. There's also an equal chance I already owned that issue... It's not a lot but it's MY lot!!! LOL.

I've been kicking this around for most of the day, I think if I had to pick an inter-company crossover, I'd go either Rin Tin Tin and Zabu or Lassie and Lockjaw. Can you imagine Lassie and Lockjaw bouncing all over trying to gather heroes to get Timmy out of a well!?!

(I've got sunshine on a cloudy day.
When it's cold outside I've got the month of May.

I guess you'd say
What can make me feel this way?
My girl (my girl, my girl)
Talkin' 'bout my girl (my girl).

I've got so much honey the bees envy me.
I've got a sweeter song than the birds in the trees.

Well, I guess you'd say
What can make me feel this way?
My girl (my girl, my girl)
Talkin' 'bout my girl (my girl).

Hey hey hey
Hey hey hey
Ooooh.

I don't need no money, fortune or fame.
I've got all the riches, baby, one man can claim.

Well, I guess you'd say
What can make me feel this way?
My girl (my girl, my girl)
Talkin' 'bout my girl (my girl).

I've got sunshine on a cloudy day
With my girl.
I've even got the month of May
With my girl
Talkin' 'bout
Talkin' 'bout
Talkin' 'bout
My girl
Ooooh
My girl
As long as I can talk about my girl...).

Prowler you have me laughing with the memory of Lassie "getting Timmy out of the well!" You ever see the one (black and white, probably from late 50s) where Jeff and Porky are swimming across a pond in a storm and Porky suddenly yells out, "Help! I've got a cramp!" Me, my little brothers, and our 3 friends all started laughing suddenly (not sure why - we were like 10 years old). But Lassie saved the day!

Hi, friends -

I paid $190 for a Good copy of Avengers #1 in the early 90s, and $150 for a VG Avengers #4 around the same time. Both sold for a combined $1400 a couple of years ago. Those of you around at the BAB for all my “sales tales” might also recall an original page from Avengers by Buscema and Palmer, purchased for $100 in 1996 sold for $4000 in 2015.

I’d never spend money on comics like that now. To be honest, if I were ever to buy comic books again (which is unlikely), I like Osvaldo’s and Edo’s policies.

I don't think i've ever spent more than $10 on a comic, and i'm not sure on that. I used to buy nearly everything published (MANY moons ago), and when seeking something from before my time it was often possible to arrange trades.

I was going to make my arguments or a Paradax/Zenith team-up, but forget that. I'm throwing my money behind the FF/Johnny Quest combo - preferably ongoing.
Everything about it lines up right, and i can just picture Ben & Race having a beer and bonding while Ben complains how Race's Johnny is the more mature of the two.

I think the most I ever spent was $30 on an Iron Man #1 back in the 90s. It may have actually been $27 but it was in that range. It was missing the value stamp so not a great copy but I wasn't going to spend $100 for other options. I find it interesting that Iron Man / Sub- Mariner #1 came out first - a month prior I believe - and I got a really nice copy of that for $5. I finally got Subby #1 around 2000 for $17 if I remember correctly. Out of all the Silver Age Marvel greats, you can find the Sub-Mariner pretty economically.

I like this second question and it is so timely because I just saw that the Archies and Monkees are going to team up in a comic. That is pretty cool.

I'd like to see Nick Fury team up with the Prisoner or the Man from UNCLE. Definitely also Hank Pym and the Atom. And somehow the Peanuts gang with the Little Rascals. For some reason - Jim Rockford and Hawkeye - I see them irritating each other but also getting along.

I like Selenarch's Land of the Lost option.

And I don't know why the Lassie escapades and heroics made me laugh as a kid also.

1) Daredevil #6 Got it for $7 NM condition. Of course this was probably 1978 or '79.
Just had to have a comic with his original uniform, and #6 was the last one like that.

2) Lots of good one said so far!
How 'bout the Peanuts gang meets Dr. Seuss' Cat in the Hat.

I'm impressed, many of you are quite economical in your comics purchases! And you have some great suggestions for crossovers.

Charlie- that sounds like a worthy purchase for a Golden Age gem like you describe! That would be a centerpiece in many collections. And I love your Sad Sack crossover...

William- that's an eye-opener of a buy; your Amazing Fantasy 15. You say it was restored, could you identify the restoration by casual examination, or was it professional?

Selenarch- FF and the Herculoids would be ...fantastic...

Disneymarvel- that twenty dollars would have been a nice buy for that book, even in the 80's. And the FF / JQ team-up would be a natural. I think the Torch would be hitting Race up about Jezebel Jade...

Edo- your two books do indeed constitute a good deal. Two Silver Age goodies!

Mike W.- I can't think of too many crossovers Conan has had, actually. Sounds like that has reams of possibilities. Warlord would be cool; he'd be a kick with Marvel's Hercules too.

Prowl- Lassie and Lockjaw! Maybe they could bring along forest ranger Corey Stuart and Crystal...

Doug- a hundred for that Buscema page? Any time, any day. I too would have jumped on that one.

-3- - Yes, your Ben/Race scenario is easy to visualize. And while they are hanging out, Reed and Benton are lost, deep in the lab...

Marti- Really? Archie and the Monkees? Ok, another one to look for. Archie publishing is really running on all cylinders these days. I'm still looking for Betty and Veronica meet Harley and Ivy...

On Conan crossovers that I know of, he met Groo the Wanderer (which I'd really like to read) and currently there's a Wonder Woman/Conan mini. I'm actually kind of curious about that one...

I paid forty bucks for a copy of Avengers #4 way back in the 80's. That's the most and the clerk wanted to argue about that, realizing even back then it was a bargain I'd found. I've paid thirty bucks for a Jonny Quest comic and twenty a few times for issues of Captain Atom and Space Ghost. But mostly I have cheap comics (relatively speaking) bought off the rack or poor condition stuff to fill gaps. I'm not a premium buyer, which now that I'm moving stuff back into the market makes them not all that collectible for modern folks. Sigh, but they were great reads nonetheless.

As for a team up -- I'd like to see energy characters like E-Man, Doctor Solar, and Captain Atom mix it up.
