This & That: To All of You, From Both of Us...

Redartz:  Hi gang; gather 'round and have a seat. It's time to do a bit of sharing. Sharing some news, that is. After two years (man, has it been that long already?), we're a little bit tired. Okay, a LOT tired. I know my friend and partner Marti has stretched his time pretty thin, and I most certainly have too. I've had a few health issues to deal with, and some other areas of life are starting to beckon pretty emphatically. There are books to read, paintings to complete, trips to take, experiences to have. And so, with a bittersweet smile, the time has come to 'lay down the mantle'.

I spoke above of sharing. Right now, that sharing means telling you how much I've enjoyed sharing this space with each one of you. Hearing your thoughts and memories each day has been great reward indeed for the efforts taken to put a few words down. Some posts have been easy to produce, others have been more, er, challenging. But you all have never failed to jump in and expound upon whatever we have here to offer. You have unceasingly made the efforts worthwhile. You have enlightened me (and many others, no doubt) to comics, films, and music that I'd never experienced. And you have always maintained a phenomenal level of politeness, of camaraderie, of fun. You have all made BitBA the pleasant place of discussion that it has always seemed to be. And so: Charlie, Edo, HB, Colin J., Colin B., Mike W., William, David b, Dr. O, Groove, Prowl, Graham, TC, Disneymarvel, Yoyo, Killraven, J.A., Selenarch, and all the others who my faulty memory missed, THANK YOU. To all those 'anonymous' folks who have followed along but not commented, THANK YOU. To all of you who have submitted ideas for posts, and to those stalwart souls who have actually given us guest posts: THANK YOU! It's very much a truth that we never would have made it without you all.

Next, I'd like to share another "Thank You" to Doug and Karen, our mentors from the ever-hallowed Bronze Age Babies. Writing articles online, and especially co-hosting a blog, would NEVER have occurred to me without their inspiration, guidance and education. The BAB was infectious in it's fascination, and the opportunity they gave to participate was irresistible. They made it look so easy, despite the obvious sweat they poured into their posts. And Doug, your help and support along the way with BitBA has been HUGE, and greatly appreciated.

Finally, a huge "Thank You" to my partner Marti. From day one of this blog, you've done amazing things with headers, titles, and editing. You have always come through with a post when the deadline loomed. You have been easy to work with, easy to communicate with, and a matchless teammate. And you have basically carried the "Twitter" end of the blog on your own capable shoulders (my Twitter skills are pretty limited). My hat's off to you, pal. One of the great highlights of our tenure on this blog was the chance to actually meet you, along with Doug and Charlie. That trip to C2E2 will live forever among my best comics experiences. Yes, that was another side benefit to the time spent here with BitBA! Indeed, it's been an honor and a pleasure.

And while this may be a closing, it isn't a goodbye. This community is a wonderful, rewarding thing, and in that spirit we'd like to continue the Tuesday "Leader" posts for awhile to see how things go. Kind of like having a weekly club meeting, and everyone's invited.

Additionally, I greatly encourage you all to check out the many fine blogs listed alongside our columns, several of them produced by members of our own community here. I will be checking in on many of them, and commenting, and visiting; I hope to see many of you there along the way.

Again, many many thanks for sharing this time and space. And if you spot a fuzzy gray haired fellow poring over the dollar boxes at your local flea market, come over and join me in the eternal search for more Bronze age goodness!

Martinex1:  For once I am largely at a loss for words.   I can only echo the message that Redartz has so eloquently outlined above.   It is definitely a busy time in our lives and it is difficult to keep up at the level we have been playing.  I too want to thank all of our regular commentators who have challenged and inspired us along the way.  It means much to us. Considering that most of us have not met, it is wonderful that friendships can evolve through the written word.   Pen pals, if you will, are no less friends because of distance.  In this day and age, the civility and camaraderie are greatly appreciated.  Thank you Red for your patience and for your willingness to jump in.  Thank you Karen and Doug for getting us started.  Thanks to all for the kind words and participation.

As Red indicated, Tuesday's Follow the Leader will continue and perhaps at some point some itch will strike where we will post again - but for now see you on Tuesday!  So get ready!  Oh, and you can call me "Mike!"   Cheers all!

Red and Marti - Your two have done a superlative job over the past two years!

You've posted on comic and nostalgia subjects far and wide that inspired us all! You even got the lads from the UK to put up a wonderful post on Marvel UK comics! "Building bridges" is wonderful and something to be proud of!

And to be sure, meeting and driving with you two and Doug to Chicago's C2E2 in the Spring of 2017 was a highlight I won't forget! It was a great time. (Red - my kids really dig that piece of Archie artwork you pointed out to me!) Never have I had such great conversation while searching for an ephemeral parking spot always allegedly "just down the street" LOL! Gotta love Chicago for that!

To one and all: Let's keep "Tuesdays Follow the Leader" going!

Cheers! Charlie

Ohhhhh, for the ability to attach images to our posts. . .

I have a veritable montage of Sad Hulk; Thoughtful Hulk; Friendly Hulk pictures that I would paper you couple o' heroes with. . .

Just saying Thank You for being such fantastic stewards over the past two years seems almost comically insufficient. If we were all in one locale, we'd be getting together at a favored local eatery, picking up your tab, making some toasts, saying a few words, and presenting you with a plaque-d Certificate of Appreciation (at the very least).

Robert, Mike--- once again, thank you SO VERY MUCH for your tireless (or. . . tired-but-doin'-it-anyhow!. . . ) efforts, above and beyond the call of duty, leading our small-ish but HIGHLY devoted platoon of cohorts, here. Something you can take comfort in is the fact that we're all largely of an age where we totally recognize what a challenge and demand on your own time this has been. And cannot lay one finger of guilt upon you for setting it aside after a hefty time at the tiller. (*Hmm-- how many more metaphors can I mix into this gumbo, eh?*) Heck, I was getting a tinge of worry that marriages/relationships could be getting frayed. . . ("Oh sure, you can stay up til 3 A.M. discussing Gunslinger Covers. . . but will you sit with me through even ONE episode of GREY'S ANATOMY-??")

I imagine you're also going to see unanimous approval for continuing our Follow the Leader exchanges. It's a perfect low-maintenance way for this gang to stay connected, as they see fit. It may even benefit from being a Tuesday "appointment" post for us. Heck-- I should go ahead and note them on the ol' calendar. . .

You guys are champs-- still with ya-!

Very sad news, but understandable. It's amazing to think of all the hard work you've put into this fun site so that we can all relive our bronze age of memories! I'll miss the frequency, but look forward to the Tuesday chats! Thanks again!

Boys -

I stand in awe (well, I’m actually sitting at my kitchen table right now, but you know...) of the dedication to detail and research you two have shared over the past two years at this space. The community you’ve built has been loyal, and that’s a testament to not only the quality of the almost-daily subjects, but also to the hosts.

Thank you!

Doug

Red & Marti/Robert & Mike, this day was inevitable but I can't believe it has come so soon. Thank you so much for the last two years - checking the latest post from BITBA has been part of my daily routine so now I will feel bereft, oh woe is me!! And thank you for including BBC TV shows and the UK #1 single in the 'Retro Metro' slot, it was much appreciated!!
I will try to think of some more subjects for 'Follow The Leader' :)

Aw, man. This sucks.
But it's quite understandable; I know how much work it takes just to put together a single post, so I can imagine how much of a commitment it is to keep a blog running on a regular basis. Keeping the Tuesday posts going is a really good idea, by the way.

I'll just end this by echoing everyone else to say good work, gentlemen - I really mean that - and thanks so much for all of the great posts and conversations.

Damn, I wasn't expecting to see this today. But I think I understand ... until I started doing my own blog, I never realized how much work it took. And you guys did it 7 days a week! I'm glad I got to be a small part of the community here and I'll definitely be around on Tuesdays. (Though I'll probably forget and automatically check the site every day for a week or so).

Robert and Mike, thanks for all the great times and good luck in everything you do from here on out :)

Robert and Mike - it's amazing to see how much you've done with BitBA in just 2 years time. But I recognize the tremendous personal effort and commitment that goes along with it, and understand why you need to take your leave. I hope we'll still see you guys around, either on Twitter or blogs. Take care and thank you for all your wonderful work.

Thanks folks, from the bottom of my heart. I know I speak for Mike as well when I reiterate how much your comments and kind words mean. You all truly rock!

Chim- you are most welcome; it's been work but it's been fun work. And, quite educational!

Charlie- yep, that trip was a definite High Point. And I'm glad your kids like the art, shows what good taste they must have! You can't beat original art...

HB- hey, I can always go back and look at your Hulk room photos and get the desired effect! And yes, I should also have thanked my wife above; for patience above and beyond the call of duty (many nights of "Your'e blogging, right?" she asks, accompanied by a wry smile; as I sit half watching tv and half typing...

Disneymarvel- I look forward to seeing you on Tuesdays! Thanks for joining us!

Doug- thanks so much, and yes, this community is truly incredible. And much credit to you and Karen; Marti and I learned from the best.

Colin J- two years does slip by on us, doesn't it? We sure appreciate our UK contingent, and all the fascinating information you have passed on. And including the BBC and UK hits was a pleasure, especially for an Anglophile like myself. Still waiting for another British Invasion...

Edo- Your appreciation means A LOT. Thanks for being such a regular part of our get togethers. Hope to see you as we touch bases on Tuesdays !

Mike W- Thanks so much, and best of luck with your ongoing blogging! I'll be stopping by more frequently...

Karen- Thanks for everything, for your support, guidance and friendship. And yes, we'll certainly be around. Maybe I'll finally get used to Twitter.

I have enjoyed your work for the past two years. Your blog was a regular stop during the week and I will continue to revisit. It's been fun to read and sometimes share with folks who share the same interests. I hate to see you go, but I certainly understand the curves that life can throw. Good luck to both of you.

I might be even more sad about this blog ending than I was about BAB. You guys took things off on a different direction and I enjoyed going on that ride with y’all. Thank you for the time and efforts. I hope you can rest easy knowing you did something cool, interesting and appreciated, and for no money, no less!

Perhaps we all can reach a point when you feel you have mined all the gold out of your particular vein of nostalgia. There were only so many good stories and ideas from the Bronze Age to begin with, and between BAB, BitBA and Peerless Power of Comics, I cannot think of anything decent that hasn’t been covered at length.

In other words....Excelsior!

Thank you all. Your kind words mean a lot to us old bloggers. It has truly been a team effort - could not do it without you all.

But we will check in with you every Tuesday and we will continue our twitter work. So Red and I will still be around dishing out the Bronze Age goodness.

Cheers!

Thanks for all the great posts that I always read and enjoy (including all the comments) but don't get to comment enough on myself. Y'all have made a nice place here, and while it won't be a daily visit, a weekly visit is a good idea. Much love and thanks for all you've done here!

To Robert and Mike

Thank you so much for your time, effort and dedication to this blog. I followed you for a while and when I eventually posted you made me feel very welcome. I wish I had done so sooner.

You have created something to treasure here, a place to congregate and reminisce. But it is hard work and I understand that you have other commitments. Heartfelt thanks for your wonderful work and I will be sure to catch up with you on Tuesdays.

Here we go, once more unto the breach dear friends ....

Well, Red and Marti, or more properly Robert and Mike, as the saying goes all good things must come to an end. Wow, it just feels like yesterday when we all bid farewell to Doug and Karen over at the BAB, and now we have to bid adieu to the BITBA crew.

It was definitely a fun ride, and while I must admit I've been more of a lurker here than an active participant, I've always followed what's been happening over here on this blog. It's not an exaggeration to say that both the BAB and BITBA blogs have some of the nicest people I've ever met online (can't say I've met any of you guys in real life 'cause I live down here in Trinidad!).

I posted a poem by JRR Tolkien called Journey's End when the BAB ended, so in closing I'd like to post an excerpt from the novel The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. It is the ending of a song by the Ents in the chapter 'Treebeard'(apologies again to Prowler!):

When Winter comes, and singing ends;
when darkness falls at last;
When broken is the barren bough, and light
and labour past;
I'll look for thee, and wait for thee, until we
meet again:
Together we will take the road beneath the
bitter rain!
Together we will take the road that leads
into the West,
And far away will find a land where both
our hearts may rest.

- Mike 'thank you Robert and Mike from the bottom of my heart' from Trinidad & Tobago.

You guys really made this a fun place to come to!

Your research has been second to none!

Thanks again, Red & Marty!

Graham- thanks for the kind words, and for spreading the word about BitBA!

Yoyo- We're so glad you joined us here, and are pleased it met with your approval! And I will continue to search for apocryphal tidbits of trivia to share, perhaps, on these future Tuesdays...

Groove- Thsnks immensely for hanging with us, and for your always cogent comments! Best of luck on your continuing blog; be seeing you there...

Anthony- Very glad you joined us, and shared your thoughts as well. I anticipate hearing more of those thoughts on the Tuesdays to come. Be well!

Mike from T n T- You're quite correct, the folks that make up our little community are the most civil, courteous, and friendly folks anyone could hope for. They, and you, are what made this a pleasant place to visit. And thanks for the Tolkien quote; I'm all choked up!

Killraven- Thanks to you for being part of the scene here, and for all your great comments. Hope to see you on Tuesdays.

And that goes for everyone; be seeing you then!

This has been a very enjoyable site to look at in my daily surfing. It was a fun way to revisit an era that meant, and continues to mean, a lot to me.

Thanks very much for your hard work in providing the best stiff belt of nostalgia on the net.

Best,
-david p.

Firstly: Thanks!!!

Secondly: No, really, thank-youse guys!!! Thanks for all you did.

Thirdly: Tuesday will still be a time to touch base, so there's that. Was just wondering, could there be a Friday Funday Forum? The same thing as Tuesday's Follow The Leader but it's on Friday...

(There's a sad sort of clanging from the clock in the hall
And the bells in the steeple too
And up in the nursery an absurd little bird
Is popping out to say cuckoo (cuckoo, cuckoo)
Regretfully they tell us, but firmly they compel us to say goodnight
To you
So long
Farewell
Auf wiedersehen
Good night
I hate to go and leave this pretty sight
So long
Farewell
Auf wiedersehen
Adu
Adu adu to you and you and you
So long
Farewell
Au revoir
Auf wiedersehen
I'd like to stay and taste my first champagne
So long
Farewell
Auf wiedersehen
Good bye I leave and heave a sigh and say goodbye
Goodbye
I'm glad to go I can not tell a lie
I flit
I float
I fleety flee I fly
The sun
Has gone
To bed and so must I
So long
Farewell
Auf wiedersehen
Good bye
Good bye
Good bye
Good bye).

PS: Tony Stark died? DIED!?! Anyhoo, 9 more issues and I'm finished with another box...

david p- Truly glad you enjoyed the BitBA. Thanks for sticking with us; and be sure to stop by for those Tuesday 'belts' of nostalgia...

Steve DC- Ah, thanks to you for all your contributions! I've learned much about UK pop culture from you and the rest of our UK contingent. I'll be certainly visiting your blog, much luck with your ongoing efforts!

Mike L- thank you; it's been a pleasure indeed to share some of that fantastic era known as the Bronze Age with you and everyone.

Prowl- Friday Funday Forum? Hmmmm, interesting proposition. We shall see what the Flying Fickle Finger of Fate has in store. And many thanks for all your comments, and for your lyrical loquaciousness. You are always much more entertaining than looking up lyrics on Wikipedia...

Wow, miss a weekend and miss a lot! I lurked BAB for a bit and made the resolution to step out when this site started. Thank you both for so many well constructed and thoughtful posts. I very much appreciate all the hard work you have put in for so long! I'll still be buzzing by on Tuesdays and hopefully, Fridays.

Cheers!

Personally I think every comics blog should be sub-titled, "Where Does The Time Go?" You gentlemen have done such wonderful work here--it felt as if I was crossing a "welcome mat" every time I dropped in, and it was such fun (and definitely informative) reading. I'm glad you'll be sticking around in some capacity--the costume party just wouldn't be the same without you. :D

Dr. O said...

Here I am late to the party (again).

I haven't been able to come check out this blog as often as I once did because I've been so busy and have other stuff on my mind, but just today I had a free minute and clicked over and saw this! I sure am glad I didn't wait much longer to check it out.

I may not have had as much time to read, let alone contribute, in the last year or so, but I have really appreciated this community since back when I first discovered Doug & Karen's Bronze Age Babies back in the mists of time somewhere and Back in the Bronze Age has been a worthy successor.

As someone who maintains their own blog and is lucky to get something up every other week, I understand how much work this is and begrudge no one the choice to move on or do something else. I hope to continue to see some of you on Twitter and hope that maybe someone else in the audience will be inspired to take up the torch.

Thanks Red and Marti and everyone else. Be well.

William said...

Thanks guys. It's been fun.

First BAB and now BITBA. I guess us Bronze-Ager types are just getting too old to keep up with the hectic pace of this digital age we now live in. LOL

Wait… hold on a sec. "Hey you kids, get off my lawn!!!" OK, I'm back. Now what were we talking about again? Ahh, I can't remember. it probably wasn't that important anyway.

All kidding aside. You guys did a great job guiding us on our nostalgic journeys down memory lane. You will be missed. (Except on Tuesdays of course, when we can all come back and post in the "Follow The Leader" segment).

Just FYI, I still regularly post Bronze-Age style action figure comics on my site at BillsComics.com. I just posted a new Fantastic Four Thanksgiving Day Special that I'm pretty proud of. So, check that out if you are so inclined.

I shall part with the following: "Now Red and Marti say good-bye to BITBA and their friends. And they would like to thank you all for kindly dropping in. They'd like to invite you back Tuesdays to this locality, to have a little helping of some Bronze-Age memories. Y'all come back now… ya hear?"

Redartz said...

Selenarch- Thank you, and thanks for taking the leap and commenting! Glad to know you'll be stopping by Tuesdays.

Comicsfan- Many thanks to you too! Especially glad that you mentioned the welcoming atmosphere; I give full credit to the great folks that joined us each day. Great folks indeed.

Dr.O- I've always valued your comments, just as I enjoy checking out your blog. Speaking of which, I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the medium of comics and it's (their?) place in our culture.

William- many thanks for your kind words, from one Spidey fan to another. And I love your 'closing theme'. "Weeeeeeeel, dogies"...

Joseph said...

Thanks so, so much to you two for all your work and everyone else in the Bronze Age community for your posts and insights.

Thank you both for your work and words, not only through the past two years but during the Bronze Age Babies years as well.

And Marti, Charlie in particular - thank you for your friendship away from the boards. May that long continue.
