Follow the Leader Episode 119: A Theatrical Threefer...

In anticipation of what's to come (I'm talking APRIL 26TH BABY) a few questions to wet our whistles:

1) What have been some of your favorites scenes or moments from the past Marvel movies?

Two for me, when Ant-Man became Giant Man!!! That was great, just great!!! And from the same movie, the relationship between Sam and Bucky. They're fighting Spider-Man, both get webbed up pretty good and Sam uses Redwing to pull Spider-Man away. Bucky says "you couldn't have done that sooner?" and Sam replies "I hate you". Love that moment

2) You're in charge of the Movie Marathon Saturday Night!!! Pick any three movies. Is there a theme that binds them all? Is it just fun movies? Common actor? Director?

An example: Robocop, Buckaroo Banzai, Footloose.

3) Adventures in movie going. We've all had that one time when all we wanted to do was see a movie. A new release, a re-release of an old favorite or one that we've never seen in a theatre. YET... nothing went as planned. Or it did, it was just someone else's plan.

Well, there you have it guys. Let's share some memories...

(Don't be so wise, I was born to fly
Not without a place in the wind
Walked off a cliff, then I closed my eyes
Ooh, I'm not a spaceman, no, no
Ooh, I'm not a spaceman

Don't need no feathers, I don't need no twine,
I'm all together in my body and my mind,
Not supernatural, just a human combine,
Ooh, I'm not a spaceman, no, no
Ooh, I'm not a spaceman!

Can't see a castle, I don't need a sleigh,
I brought my wings, no, not today
I'm a cosmopolitan, right-handed wingless man
Ooh, I'm not a spaceman, no, no
Ooh, I'm not a spaceman).

Hmmm, a three-parter today. Okay, I'll do my best.

1) It's a bit of a cliché now, but the scene in Spider-Man when he loses his mask while saving all the people on the train and they give the mask back and collectively decide to keep his secret. Stuff like that never happened in the comics, where the average person seemed to hate Spidey even after he saved them.

2) Well, the Back to the Future trilogy comes to mind; I think it works best if you treat it as one long movie, watching all three in one go.

3) I haven't spent much time in movie theatres, so nothing comes to mind.

1. There's lots of great scenes and moments in the Marvel movies, from the fist-pumping to the funny. I have to say, though, that one of my favorites is in the otherwise middling Iron Man III: when all of those people get sucked out of an airplane's fuselage, and IM saves them by grabbing two people and then has them grab the hands of the others like a big daisy chain. *That's* why we love superheroes, man.

2. Hmm, let's see, how about:
1980s buddy/action films: 48 Hours, Stakeout and Midnight Run.
Caper/heist films, pt. 1: The Great Train Robbery, A Fish Called Wanda and Quick Change.
Caper/heist films, pt. 2: Mad Money, The Bank Job and Logan Lucky.
Star Trek trilogy night: Wrath of Khan, Search for Spock and The Voyage Home.
Favorite Xmas movies: Die Hard, Scrooged and Trading Places.

3. Nothing like what you suggest comes to mind; however, on the topic of adventures in movie-going in general, back in my early college days, I sometimes went to movies with a few buddies and we always tried to see how much contraband (i.e., snacks & drinks) we could sneak in so we wouldn't have to pay the exorbitant prices at the concession stands. One of our biggest coups was making our way in with big bag of tortilla chips, a container of deli-fresh salsa and 6-pack of Pepsi. Apparently, though, once one of those guys and someone else managed to sneak a pizza into the theater - although that may have been b.s., because they refused to tell us how they did it.

1) Welp, Mike got one of my big ones-- unmasked Peter, unconscious after saving the commuter train. . . "He's. . . just a kid-!" That quiet sequence with the folks on the train is heavy-handed and shamelessly melodramatic AND beautiful AND perfect. Never fails to choke me up.
-Hulk grabbing a jeering Loki by the ankle and repeatedly slamming him to the floor in the first Avengers film is (of course) just about as high as a moment can get. Lord, the audience reaction-! It wasn't until my third viewing that I realized the Hulk had a parting line (!). And I NEVER heard Loki's wheezing whimpers in the theater ever.
-The great extended "single" shot battle sequence in the first Avengers film was also kind of a landmark for me. It finally, FINALLY gave a true visual sense of what those innumerable running fights in the comics were trying to convey.

2) Wellllll-- The first three Indiana Jones films, anyone? Also, the first three THIN MAN films (William Powell/Myrna Loy) are strong contenders, especially since that series does maintain its own continuity from film to film. Or-- oh golly!-- WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION; MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS; and AND THEN THERE WERE NONE. Three fine Agatha Christie films. OR-- THE BIRDS; PSYCHO; and FRENZY. . . Hitchcock's later turn toward outright horror... Or Frank Capra, with MEET JOHN DOE; MR DEEDS GOES TO TOWN; and MR SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON-- Oh, I could do this all night. . .

3) Mmmmmmmm, this may have more to do with how I'd hoped the post-movie evening would end up, rather than the movie itself. . . at least back in my youthful college days. . . (I will say that, for all of its astonishing flaws that now seem obvious in retrospect, SGT PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND proved to be an incredibly date-movie--)

Hey guys! Sorry I’ve been out of the loop a bit lately. Great questions...Cheers all!

1) A few scenes come to mind... of course the Cap elevator scene, but I also liked the Ant-Man / Thomas the Train scene, and also the original Iron Man clunky grey armor scene! Dr. Strange doesn’t get tons of credit but I did like the initial astral plane sc me as well.

2) Three movies... Something Wild; After Hours; Goodfellas! Or Strangers on a Train; Rear Window; Rope!

3) I don’t know that I have such a tale to tell. I need to think about that one.

1. Oh man, so many it's hard to think. But I'll go with an early favorite, in the first X-men film when Logan rescues a scared, lonely Rogue. Some nice characterization for both, at least until Sabretooth showed up...

2. Goofy comedy: Caddyshack, Airplane!, and Naked Gun...
Or, Beach movies: Beach Blanket Bingo, Ski Party and Muscle Beach Party.
Or, Mel Brooks: Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles and The Producers.
Or, Disaster flikcks: Earthquake, Towering Inferno and Poseidon Adventure.

3. This answer could go in the previous question. The summer of my high school graduation, my girlfriend and I had the opportunity to catch a terrific triple feature at 5he drive-in. A long night, still amazed our parents ok'd it. The features: Grease, I Want to Hold Your Hand (Speilberg's Beatles romp, not well known but loads of fun), and FM. Great musical triple play. And we did manage to stay awake,,,

Oh Martinex1, that whole elevator scene then he jumps out of the elevator, lands on his shield ("Are you kidding me? Are you kidding me!?!"), gets up, limps away then ends up taking on the gunship with just his shield. That was the Cap of comics brought to life. I feel like I need to back and watch them all again before the 26th.

Speaking of movies...

All The Right Moves, Spacecamp and Howard the Duck. (Lea Thompson)

Super Mario Bros, Double Dragon and Street Fighter. (Video game movies)

Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Some Kind Of Wonderful and Pretty In Pink. (Soundtracks)

Red Dawn, Footloose and Dirty Dancing (All had bad remakes)

Escape From New York, Big Trouble In Little China and Tequila Sunrise (Kurt Russell)

I think I've told both these stories before.

Once, we were going to catch a movie. The group was big enough that we needed two cars so say 8 people. Somewhere we had gotten our information crossed and some of us thought we were going to meet up, go eat, then catch a movie. (Remember when you had to look up movie times in the paper?) Others thought eat, meet then movie. Waiting for the eaters to show up meant the non eaters were stuck hitting McDonalds in the mad dash to the theatre. Luckily, one of the girls had one of those huge purses so we stuffed all the food in her purse. Well, of course, when she opened her purse ALL YOU COULD SMELL WAS MCDONALDS!!! Everyone starts to look around and we slink down trying to hide. Which meant we were the ones with the food!!! I sat up and tried to get everyone in our group to look sit up and look around...

I'll save the story of "The Return of the Jedi" opening day for tomorrow...

(I've held it all inward, God knows, I've tried
But it's an awful awakening in a country boy's life
To look in the mirror in total surprise
At the hair on my shoulders and the age in my eyes
Amanda, light of my life
Fate should have made you a gentleman's wife
Amanda, light of my life
Fate should have made you a gentleman's wife
It's a measure of people who don't understand
The pleasures of life in a hillbilly band
I got my first guitar when I was fourteen
Well I finally made forty, still wearing jeans
Amanda, light of my life
Fate should have made you a gentleman's wife
Amanda, light of my life
Fate should have made you a gentleman's wife).

1.) You already mentioned my two top scenes:
- Civil War, when Ant-Men becomes Giant-Man. At least, the original set-up of the Avengers is complete! And so well made! I sat there, my mouth wide open and smiling for the whole scene the first time.
- Captain America in the elevator. Such a nice set-up with more and more men coming into the elevator and then the fighting choreography and the finish with the jump. Classic.
- I may add all the little Groot scenes, beginning with little Groot secretly dancing at the end of GotG 1, then the opening of GotG 2 and all the scenes following.

2.) Some of you already mentioned Hitchcock. What about a Hitchcock & Cary Grant movie night:
NOTORIOUS, TO CATCH A THIEF, NORTH BY NORTHWEST (one of my all time favorites).

Or some strange and probably unknown but well-aged 80s/90s SciFi movies:
Strange Days (1995), Nirvana (1997), Miracle Mile (1988)
