Follow the Leader: Episode 106: Merry Memories Made!
Martinex1: Happy New Year one and all! I hope that 2019 is filled with happiness, fun, and enjoyment! All the best to you and your friends and your families. Cheers!
Typically at this time of year we get together with family, friends, have some spare time due to the Holidays... Something good, interesting, fun, weird happens. Share it?
I was riding back from my folks on Xmas evening and my 20 year old son and I were in the same car, singing Beatles songs via his Spotify account via his phone. (Odd for a "kid" to be into the Beatles, these days!)
We're singing along to all kinds of songs like "No Reply", "I'm Only Sleeping", "Yes I am Falling" etc.! This was a blast!
We don't see our kids much since they are at the University and even when home they have "stuff to do!" I filed it under "favorite memories!"
Sunday I went into my LCB to look for Archie #701.
I didn't find it but this last week Marvel has reprinted like 10 awesome Kirby Fantastic Fours for $1 each!
First appearance of Skrulls, Super Skrull, Ronan... just all kinds of mind-blowing Lee-Kirby FF stuff from the 1960s. And since they are side-by-side you can really see the progression Kirby's work over the 8 or so years! Cool Beans!
I could not stop myself though I have these in Archives or originals in long boxes! I plunked down $5 and took 5 home! I'm digging it and briefly felt like a kid again!
Great memories CH-47! We had a great holiday. One of the best times was simply putting together a 1000 piece puzzle with my boys and wife. And going out for wings and discussing everything from the Mona Lisa to termite mounds in Australia. Good times.
As far as comics I am rereading a Deathlok collection and some early ROM issues.
Happy New Year, everyone; hope it's a fine one all around and in all aspects.
Charlie- great stories! Your son obviously has good musical taste. And it's not uncommon; my son and nephew both are HUGE Beatles fans and are collecting vinyl editions of the Beatles catalog. Oh, and nice pickups at the comic shop. I'm watching for that Archie 701 as well.
Marti- sounds like a fine day for your crew. Did you complete your puzzle?
As for my holiday: it was a special treat because our youngest son came from Arizona for a visit and brought our little grandson. Only the second time I've been able to see the little guy. And at dinner I got to sit between both my sons and my nephew and their families; and enjoyed a family game night with all of them. First time that's happened in years.
Aside from that, my wife and I hit the flea market Sunday (they always have a big, 600 booth flea market here each New Year's). Picked up a few fun items; nothing spectacular but a couple of nice Silver age Archies for a couple dollars. Aaaaand, we managed to stay up until midnight, filling some of the time watching Incredibles 2 (a gift from my kindly wife). Good times....
I had to use HBGirl's car for a day or two last week, CH-47, and discovered that she had long-since purloined my ABBA'S GREATEST HITS double-CD. Turns out that, while neither of us is particularly devoted to the group, we both LOVE that album, and kept it on while running other errands together. She's also been known to opt for the Beatles Red and Blue albums if we're gonna be in the car for awhile. . .
Notable moments in our own family holiday?
1) On Christmas Eve, we went to the 5:00 Family Service at my wife's church (our long-time habit, with dinner afterward), and it's usually the busier service for this slowly-dwindling congregation. This year-- there were only four other people when we arrived, right before the service. We doubled the congregation at that point, although another 4 to 6 came in after the service had begun. By the time they got to communion near the end there were, maybe, 14 to 16 folks on-hand? Incredibly awkward situation. We sang loud, though, and made it a point to listen more attentively than ever to give the pastor someone to talk to. Even as completely non-religious as I am myself, you still want to see her have a fulfilling service, y'know?
2) My Mom is a DEVOTED Scrabble player. They don't come more competitive at it than she, believe me. Whenever she visits, we play MANY games over the course of her stay, w/ HBWife joining in on about half of them. We're pretty evenly matched. BUT---- the first two games we played during this visit, I hit TWO seven-letter plays (I forget the "Yahtzee"-like slang term for it--) in BOTH games. I have never in my life hit two in the same game, let alone have it happen in consecutive ones. My wife was making cookies in the kitchen at the time and was of course heckling, and throwing out accusatory comments about cheating, and insisting I was a terrible son, etc, etc---- ooooooh it was a high-ol' time-! (I, of course, maintained the highest level of magnanimity throughout----).
Mom did stomp me mightily a few days down the road. . .
And--- *sigh*--- we just struck our Christmas tree this morn (to use theatrical terminology). . . happily, my shop will remain infestivated for a couple more weeks at the very least. . .
