Martinex1: No we are not talking about the Beach Boys today; we are however discussing family pets. Most of the frequent commenters really seemed to be at the height of their collecting during their adolescent and teen years. Those were also the childhood years that my family seemed to have a lot of pets... how about yours?
I had quite a few brothers and sisters and together we had fish, toads, an iguana, a couple of birds, a rabbit, two bulldogs (Prunella and Doc), a German Shorthair Pointer (who was like Houdini and always escaped the house), and a few other pets. It was quite a menagerie but never a zoo.
We had many memorable and funny stories involving those creatures great and small. Share your favorite childhood pet stories (happy and sad) from the Bronze Age.
And as a bonus question, who is the best comic book animal and pet?

We had a Manx cat and Manx cats don't have tails. I'd get asked "Why hasn't your cat got a tail ?" or "Did your father cut off your cat's tail ?". Our cat didn't have a name - he was just "the cat".
My friend and next-door neighbor, Martin, had two cats, two little terrier dogs and two huge Irish wolfhounds - whenever I went into Martin's house those huge dogs were lounging on the furniture and I sat nervously on the edge on the settee trying to keep as much distance from them as possible :)
I mean "of the settee" not "on the settee".
Best comic-book animal: Lockjaw because you wouldn't need cars, planes etc with him around (but he'd cost a fortune in dog-food).
Also Gnasher - the pet and sidekick of Dennis The Menace (UK version).
Gnasher from Dennis the Mennis, Milou from Tin Tin, and snoopy from Charlie Brown!!!
Colin and CH47 - I guess we are the only animal fans around. Today's post heads to the parakeet cage. Ha!
One good thing though - the unanimous voting for Gnasher got me to look up some UK Dennis the Menace. Cheers.
Late checking in, but count me among the animal lovers! Especially dogs. Really love dogs. Dogs are incredible. Dogs are fun, and great companions. Did I say I like dogs?
As for four color pets- Kitty Pryde's dragon "Lockheed " was a big fave of mine. Their interplay was wonderful, and a big part of what kept me reading X-Men after Byrne left.
So my question is, "Can one appreciate Dennis and Gnasher if one did not grow up reading them?" I still laugh, really laugh... Cheers!
The funniest story that I have doesn't really involve one of my own pets.....my neighbors across the street had a talking bird..not sure what kind, but that was the most amazing bird. He could mimic anything or anybody. He could imitate the back-up horn on the garbage truck perfectly. He sounded just like the lady of the house. He said swear words that the man of the house would say when he was watching a ballgame on TV (amazing how those are the words they remember....kind of like kids).
The best thing that this bird did was harass the neighbor's dog, a somewhat hyper Dachshund. He would call the dog by her name in the lady's voice and the dog would come around the house to where they kept the bird and the bird would then bark at the dog in another dog's voice and scare her. He would do that everyday and the dog always fell for it. We were so sad when that bird passed away a few years ago.
Graham that is a great story. It had to be fun to watch the bird tricking the neighbors' dog. Some of those animals are smarter than we think.
