Follow the Leader: Episode 89: The Mount Rushmore of Bands!

Martinex1: If you have a chance, look back at the 88 topics that we have previously discussed on Tuesdays as we Follow the Leader! Every week we wait for a topic starter and then jump in with plenty of comments.  What is it going to be today?

What about continuing the Mount Rushmore theme from Saturday but about music. I think a single Mount Rushmore of music would be too difficult so I'm going to break it down into categories.

Today let's discuss a Mount Rushmore of bands or singing groups (like the Supremes). Each of the four heads should represent one group/band. Which four heads would you choose?

Really liking The Supremes as a choice, I'm gonna steal that one. . .

Supremes

The Four Seasons (although they're not a personal favorite by a long stretch---)

Beatles

The Who (Between them and the Rolling Stones, I'd say their evolution and innovation had the creative & influential edge.)

. . . but. . . by later today my opinions may well have changed-!

HB, you're supposed to choose four heads (it's Mount Rushmore!) not just four groups. Which Beatle would you choose to represent all four of them? Who from the Who? Which Four Season? Which Supreme?

Four HEADS not four groups!

I'll use my Mount Rushmore to represent different genres of my music interests:

1. Richard Sherman of the Sherman Brothers for all the wonderful songs of Disney movies.
2. Maynard Ferguson - my favorite Jazz Trumpeter
3. Peter Cetera to represent my favorite Jazz/Rock group Chicago
4. Steve Lukather to represent my favorite rock group Toto

There are a lot of other musicians that I love to listen to, but these represent my Bronze Age.

D'oh!
Okey-doke--- lemme get my (currently 16-headed, wildly ostentatious, environmentally irresponsible) Rushmore pared down to manageable levels, eh?

Diana Ross
Frankie Valli
John Lennon
Roger Daltrey

Man, w/ groups like the Beatles, Stones, Who, Zeppelin-- it's a really tough call to say which member should be the rep, y'know?

Must the band have played instruments their time together? Do the Monkeys and Jackson Five generally meet the criteria so as to nominate Tito Jackson and Peter Tork? I need to know!

My Four:

1) Keith Moon
2) Stan Lynch
3) Nail Peart
4) Larry Mullen Jr

A comment to Travis Morgan: Yes, Byrne was drawing all of that simultaneously:

Byrne's run on Iron Fist ran November of 75 to September of 77, The Champions February of 77 to August of 77 (bi-monthly last three issues), Marvel Team-Up January of 77 to March of 77 then back again in July of 77 to June of 78 AND the X-Men December of 77 to March of 81.

That's a whole lot of work!!!

(I play nights in the Spanish part of town
I've got music in my hands
The work is hard to find
But that don't get me down
Rosalinda understands

Crazy Latin dancing solo down in Herald Square
Oh Havana I've been searching for you everywhere
And though I'll never be there
I know what I would see there
I can always find my Cuban skies
In Rosalinda's eyes

When she smiles she gives everything to me
When she's all alone she cries
And I'd do anything to take away her tears
Because they're Rosalinda's eyes

Senorita don't be lonely, I will soon be there
Oh Havana I've been searching for you everywhere
I've got a chance to make it
It's time for me to take it
I'll return before the fire dies
In Rosalinda's eyes

All alone in a Puerto Rican band
Union wages, wedding clothes
Hardly anyone has seen how good I am
But Rosalinda says she knows

Crazy Latin dancing solo down in Herald Square
Oh Havana I've been searching for you everywhere
And though I'll never be there
I know what I would see there
I can always find my Cuban skies
In Rosalinda's eyes).

Oooooookay, personal choices as opposed to an 'official' historical assemblage:

John Lennon, from some British group.

Donald Fagen, from Steely Dan

Michael Jackson, representing the J5 (and himself, obviously)

Justin Heyward, for the Moody Blues

John Lennon, Mick Jagger, Debbie Harry, and Glenn Frey.

Not necessarily my favorites but trying to represent the UK, U.S., pop, blues influenced rock, disco, punk, etc. Hard to capture it all. In all for the 16 head Mount Rushmore!

Blogger Charlie Horse 47 has already changed...

John Fogerty of CCR - "Senator’s Son Fortunate One" is the song in particular

Bono of U2 - "War,War She's the Refugee" (War Album) is the song in particular

Edwin’s Starr - "War" (Powerful. All us kids wanted that 45. It was sold out for weeks.)

Bob Marley - "War" (Man he's got his soul in that song.)

That would make my four on mount rushmore

I scratched Country Joe (and Fish) because we all know that "Napalm Sticks to Kids."
