Follow the Leader Episode 139: Quotable Quotations...
Redartz: Tuesday, Tuesday, Tuesday's here; let's all give a rousing cheer! For all our friends from far and near, now set a topic without peer!
Pardon the hyperbolic prose, if you will. Life , the universe, and everything else (apologies to Douglass Adams) sometimes frazzle the mind. You know how it goes, don't you? Aaaaaaanyway, as I type this evening, the dog wants to play ball, and she's mighty persistent. She dearly loves her "small ball", a humble rubber ball about 1 1/2 " in diameter. More specifically, she loves to catch it on the fly. Which means, of course, that someone must throw it. That being me; and she doesn't seem concerned that I'm trying to set the stage for some bountiful banter. Therefore, I (and "Dynah") thank you for stepping up and offering a topic for the week. Oh, and if you're a dog parent too, give your 'fur baby' a pat for me...

What were your favorite "sayings" from comics, TV, radio???
TV's Banana Splits on Saturday morning in late 60s (early 70s?): Uh ohhhhh! Chongo!
Radio's WLS in Chicago: Sunday Night! Sunday Night! SUnday Night! At SMOKIN US 30 drag strip! Where the great ones..... run, run, run, run....
Comics: Hulk Smash Puny Human!
Oh boy - I have many more (It's Clobberin Time!) but I'll stop there!
We have a beautiful long-haired Dachshund. She wants nothing to do with fetching a ball, so it can be a bit tough interacting with her LOL. She does love to bark though!
From comics I have to say that the one saying which has stuck with me for years is the exclamation, "Death and damnation!" from Tomb of Dracula. I still use that in sudden moments of frustration/pain.
From movies, I still use "Holy Peter!" from Gorky Park. It seemed so strange and dissonant at the time, I guess it stuck with me. Other than that, Buckaroo Banzai has been a treasure trove. "Wherever you go ... there you are." And of course, "Laugh while you can, monkey boy!"
Coming straight from the mothership ... at Yoyodyne Industries, "where the future begins tomorrow,"
Cheers!
My favorite comic book saying has to be "Sheesh!" Not sure when I first started saying it or which character said it first for me to have heard it. Most likely it was Bugs Bunny or some other cartoon character. Lots of comic strip characters have used it, too, and I always read the daily comics in our local papers.
The Thing being my favorite character says "Sheesh" a lot, so I think of him first when I say it.
"SHEESH" has been my personalized license plate for 35 years, as well.
I love Homer Simpson's D'OH!!
Conan's BY CROM AND MITRA!!
Any comic cover where somebody said: NO - it can't be YOU!!
Red, it's Douglas Adams, not Douglass.
Comics: Oh, my Stars and Garters! and Sweet Christmas! The Beast and Luke Cage.
TV: Number two, the larch. Monty Python’s Flying Circus.
Radio: Gotta Get Down, by Murray Saul from WMMS FM 101 The Buzzard from Cleveland, Ohio.
Travis Morgan
Hmmm...the obvious pick would be Stan's various soapbox slogans but growing up I tended to imitate/badly mimic the cartoons:
"I'm haaapppyyy" complete with a Droopy face.
"I said I said I said" aka Foghorn Leghorn
You get the idea.
I still use "with great power comes great responsibility" because, well, it's true ;)
Nuff Said ... Nuff Said?
There's a Trek saying/catchphrase for every occasion:
Live long, and prosper.
Make it so.
Engage.
Resistance is futile.
Face front true believers!
Be pure, be vigilant, BEHAVE! is one of faves, Torquemada in Nemesis (2000AD). Villains have all the best lines - Tremble before Doom!
Did the Fast Show make it across the Atlantic at all? That was almost entirely made up of catchphrases, and they were mostly pretty good. Smokin' in fact.
- sean
Sean I am not familiar with Fast Show. That don't mean much, though, as I pretty much only watch "tv" on netflix but for live sports.
This is a great topic, teammates--- don't abandon ship--- just been TOO schedule-blasted to contribute to it yet, but FULLY intend to by sometime this weekend, at least!
Excelsior!
Gooooodnight, Gracie!
Th-th-th-that's all, folks!
Goodnight Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are!
HB
(Oh! Fodder for others, if they'd like to tackle it: LAUGH-IN spawned about a ZILLION little catch-phrases that saturated pop-culture--- who'd like to volunteer a few of those?)
HB - Your commentary is "very interesting but shtoopid!" LOL.
Now "sock it to me baby" with a few of your recollections!
LAUGH-IN spawned a boatload of catch-phrases? You bet your bippy it did....
I been known to blurt these out occasionally :
“Thursday. Today is Thursday.”
“Dry up, Tubbo.”
(Both from PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE”)
-b.t.
"Here Comes The Judge!"
"And that's the truth. . . THPLBLBLBLBLBPBPB!"
"Ladies and Gents, Laugh-In Looks at the News-"
"One Ringy-dingy; Two Ringy-dingies. . . "
"No Chicken Jokes!" (Joann Worley's schtick-- tho I found it kinda tiresome even as a kid-).
Flip Wilson's Geraldine: "The Devil Made Me Do It!"
'Course, the problem with SO MANY of the similarly hyper-hyped, sit-com-spawned catch-phrases that became heavily identified with one character is that they were funny for about the first, maybe, five times (at most, if I'm being generous)-- but writers would treat them like sacred cows that had to be brought out for viewing as often as possible:
"DY-NO-MIIIIIIIITE!"
"KISS MY GRITS--"
"'EEEEEEEEEY---" (Fonzie)
"D'oh!" (Although I still use that one--)
Lucy's nose-scrunched, nasal "EEEEEOOOOOOOOOO"
etc, etc, etc,
HB
OMG, i think the worst offender in the "over-repeated catchphrase" sweepstakes has to be "Hi, I'm Larry, This is my brother Darryl, and this is my other brother Darryl". Yes, it was pretty darn funny first time i heard it. By the third or fourth time, it was nails on a chalkboard. By the thirty-fifth time, i wanted to murder someone.
Lots of great fun quotes, all! Well done!
A few of mine: from the immortal film "Airplane":
"Surely you can't be serious." "I am serious, and don't call me Shirley".
From "Treasure of Sierra Madre ":
"Badges? We don't need no stinkin' badges!"
From Scooby Doo:
"I'd have gotten away with it if not for those meddling kids!"
From Big Bang Theory:
"Bazinga!"
From "Lost in Space":
"Danger, Will Robinson!" (Must be executed in a stentorian tone of voice)
From Fantastic Four:
It's Clobberin' Time!"
