Things you dislike except in a few cases.

For example you might say:
I don't like any Madonna songs except "Papa Don't Preach" which is a masterpiece
or
I mostly hate Westerns but I like the ones starring Clint Eastwood.

I like Madonna songs and Westerns so the above don't apply to me but do you have any such examples from music, films, books, comics...even food.

Here are some of mine:

I never liked reggae music except for some Bob Marley songs like "Buffalo Soldier" and "No Woman No Cry". And I always liked "Pass The Dutchie" by Musical Youth (UK #1 hit in 1982). And some Eddy Grant songs.

I've always loathed rap music but I did like some Eminem songs (would white rappers like Eminem be accused of cultural appropriation nowadays?)

I've never been interested in crime/detective fiction but I do love "Murder On The Orient Express" by Agatha Christie - the exotic location and the international cast of characters has always appealed to me as well as the final reveal (SPOILER: they all did it). It's the only crime novel I own. I also loved the Three Investigators/Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew novels but they never led me to an interest in adult crime/detective fiction.

I am indifferent to Star Wars except the original 1977 film which I still love. I just pretend the sequels/prequels/more sequels don't exist.

I can't stand fantasy/sword & sorcery except Robert E. Howard.

I mostly dislike seafood - the thought of eating lobster, octopus or oysters is revolting. I even avoid most fish - except tinned salmon which I've loved forever :)

Just to clarify - it's only fantasy NOVELS that I dislike - movies of that subject are quite enjoyable.

I also find most science-fiction novels hard-going. I prefer the more "realistic" kind like Andy Weir's 'The Martian' (I bought my copy long before the film came out). The follow-up, called 'Artemis', has just been published which I've bought but I haven't started reading it yet.

I usually dislike questions asked on message boards. But this one was pretty good. :D

Seriously though -

I usually don't like most comics produced by the Big Two in the last 15 years or so, but I really enjoyed Mark Waid's recent run on Daredevil. It was a surprisingly upbeat and fun read (for the most part) after a long dark period in DD's history.

I haven't liked many of the DC movies released this century. I did not care for any of the Nolan Bat-films, or Snyder's "Man of Steel", or "Batman vs. Superman", or "Suicide Squad", etc. But I very much enjoyed the new "Justice League" movie quite a bit. I don't understand why some people are panning it online so much. I liked it as much (or better than) "Thor Ragnarok". And I'm not alone, as the JL movie has an 85% LIKE score from actual movie goers on Rotten Tomatoes.

Also, I usually don't like uncooked tomatoes, but I like chunky salsa.

I'll probably think of more of these later.

I don't generally like cheese, except on pizza.

I dislike Stephen King, but Storm of the Century was alright.

I dislike Twin Peaks, unless David Lynch is directing.

I dislike whiskey, unless I am in the company of low men.

I dislike sitting in a classroom, unless the instructor is an expert in their field.

I dislike opera, unless I know someone in the cast.

The list could go on and on and on ...

Great topic and cheers!

Hmmm, well ...

I don't like reality shows, except Amazing Race (and Master Chef Canada);

I don't like country music, except for a handful of songs;

I absolutely hate U2, except for Vertigo;

I don't care for Lovecraft, but I like the Call of C'thulhu RPG.

You triggered one for me in your examples, CJ.

I'm not a fan of Madonna albums, with the great exception of I'm Breathless.

Let's see if I get the hang of this...

I don't like Gene Colan's work except when drawing Captain America, Daredevil, Dracula, Sub Mariner, Iron Man, and everyone's favorite The Green Captain Marvel!

Hiya,

I only dislike Jack Kirby when Mark Evanier is talking or writing about him.

Is anybody else watching that AMC documentary? I was watching it until I realized that I would be watching five minutes of commercials for every ten minutes of show.

Hmmm. Well, I dislike Rap music, with the exception of some cool JayZ cuts. I dislike nuts on anything, with the exception of a Port Wine Cheese Ball. I dislike any holiday music before Thanksgiving, with the exception of Vince Guaraldi's "Charlie Brown" soundtrack. That's about all I can come up with at the moment...

Fun topic.

Never liked gory horror movies but really like John Carpenter’s “The Thing”.

Never liked soft rock and folk but really like Carly Simon.

Never liked violent anti-heroes (Punisher, Lobo, what Wolverine became) but I did like Paladin (who wasn’t even that well fleshed out a character).

Never liked Charles Bronson movies except for “Telefon.”

Never liked Roger Daltrey’s solo albums except for the soundtrack to “McVicar.”

Typically don’t like replacement heroes taking on iconic roles (ie Rhodey as Iron Man, Ben Reilly as Spidey, Azrael as Batman) but I do like Scott Lang as Ant-Man.

CH47 - I think you are playing the opposite game - “something liked except for..” because I too enjoy everything about Gene Colan’s work EXCEPT his later Avengers run. Cheers.

I never liked war comics but I loved DC's, "Weird War Tales."

While not scared of spiders, I have a lack of affection for them in general. I do, however, find zebra spiders adorable.

I hate Foreigner but I like, "Urgent."

I hate the Osmonds but I like, "Crazy Horses."

I hate Oasis but I like, "Champagne Supernova."

I didn't like Frank Robbins' art but I loved his art on, "The Shadow."

I don't like any of the post-Adam West Batman movies but I love, "The Dark Knight."

I hate Duran Duran but I love, "Ordinary World."

Thanks for all the comments.

Another subject that comes to mind is poetry. I've never been interested in poetry but I've always loved "The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge (which I studied in school). Plus a handful of other poems like "The Lady Of Shalott" by Alfred, Lord Tennyson and that one about the snowy woods by Robert Frost. And John Betjamen had a nice poem about Christmas :)

I've never been a big fan of Led Zeppelin, which might be heresy on this blog. But I've always been a fan of one of their albums, 'Houses Of The Holy'. It's the only studio album of theirs that I've ever owned, had it in LP, cassette and mp3. The album contains my two favorite Led Zeppelin songs, 'D'Yer Mak'er' and 'Over The Hills And Far Away', and the other songs are pretty good too.

OK... I can't go a day without saying something...

George Harrison: I've never been a connoisseur but for "Tax Man" and "My Sweet Lord." I've tried listening to the "hugely successful" triple album post Beatles but it just doesn't ring for me.

From Terry in Virginia:

Okay, here goes:

I don’t like any of Paul McCartney’s post-Beatles songs except for Maybe I’m Amazed. But I would still go see him perform live again if I could afford it. I’ve seen him three times, and he does an outstanding show.

I don’t like most of The Rolling Stones songs after Exile on Main Street, but “Out of Control” from 1997 and “It Won’t Take Long” from 2005 are excellent.

I don’t like Madonna, Prince, Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, Brittney Spears, Janet Jackson, or anyone else from that dance-oriented pop genre. But I totally love Tina Turner, who might have a distant stylistic connection in her overproduced concerts, but she just rocks!

I don’t like most of Grant Morrison’s comic book work, with the remarkable exception of his JLA run.

I don’t like any of Don Heck’s art, but I feel obliged to look at it when I want to read early issues of The Avengers.

I don’t like Damien Wayne as Robin. Umm… nope, I can’t think of an exception for that one.

I don’t like DC Comics since New 52 wiped the Justice Society from history, but I’m still crossing my fingers that they will return, in some form, more than 18 months into the so-called Rebirth thingamajig…

I don’t like Master of Kung Fu except for the first three issues written and drawn by Jim Starlin. Sorry, no offense to Paul Gulacy fans who might be lurking here….

Colin, ditto on Star Wars..., I did enjoy Empire Strikes Back a lot, but really nothing after that.., just all seemed forced and pretty much regurging the same idea with different variations.

Sooo, as I collect vintage SW items, I **only** focus on anything specifically made before 1980. After that it started it's growth into a bloated franchise, much like Jabba the Hut himself. Oh there were nice items issued (still enjoying the HUGE lights-and-sound Millenium Falcon from a few years past..), but any fan-club items or toys I'll only collect are from back then.
