Follow the Leader: Potential Marvel Video!

Redartz: Hi gang! Your humble host is rather sidetracked and occupied this week, so it seemed a perfect opportunity to bring out the Leader. I've got a question for anyone and everyone who enjoys the Marvel programming on Disney+. What corner of the MCU would you like to see explored?

For me, I would love to see an animated version of Marvel Two-in-One. This was the Bronze Age comic that got me hooked. The Thing will always be my favorite character and he meshes well with all sorts of heroes and genres. I think he'd be the best way to introduce other characters who could then go on to their own series.

This would allow lots of time to properly develop the Thing's wonderful, heroic, tragic and entertaining personality.

And animation could keep the budget down, but give us the effects needed for the stories to thrive!

Disney Marvel:
EXCELLENT question / topic! There are so many different ways you could go with this. Here’s one off the top of my head:

Remember when Paramount ‘re-mastered’ and up-graded the special effects in STAR TREK TOS, about ten years ago? I would take a similar approach to the old Grantray Lawrence MARVEL SUPER HEROES cartoons. But I would be a bit more ruthless overall — I’d keep the melodramatic Library Music soundtracks and the vocal performances (John Vernon as Tony Stark / Iron Man , come ON!) and re-do almost ALL of the visuals, practically from scratch. Same basic idea as the originals: keep that flat-colored ‘comic book’ look, re-purposing panels from the comics as much as possible, with minimal actual animation, etc, but just do it all BETTER.

I have a huge fondness for the originals, but I find them almost impossible to watch anymore. The super-low-budget limitations of the time fatally rob the source materials of one of their main strengths (and the thing that REALLY set them apart from the rather staid DC comics, even more so than the ‘Super heroes With Super hang-ups’ schtick) : the explosive ENERGY of the early Marvel Age. I think it would be a lot easier these days, with all the digital tools available now, to more closely approximate the vitality and excitement of Bronze Age Marvel in a ‘TV Cartoon’ context, and at a fairly low cost compared to shows like INVINCIBLE or VOLTRON or CASTLEVANIA..

Whether or not anyone under the age of 50 would want to WATCH them, that’s something else…

I dunno, I kinda feel like Marvel does better with movies than TV shows. (No, I haven't seen Wandavision yet, so maybe that's an exception). DC's TV shows seem to work better than their movies for me ... I'm looking forward to the new season of Stargirl; the first season was pretty cool, with lots of references to the JSA, Infinity Inc, and even All-Star Squadron.

Haven't watched any of the Marvel TV offerings - they're not offered on the streaming platform I have through the national telecom company, and none of the channels I get show them, either (except for Agents of SHIELD a while back, but by the time I figured out it was being aired, I'd missed too much of it). I am quite interested in seeing Wandavision and Loki in particular.
Some of the DC stuff I have watched, though: Doom Patrol (loved the first season, the second not quite as much), Stargirl (loved it from start to finish and looking forward to season 2) and Superman and Lois (totally loving it).
All that to say that I'm not sure what I'd like to see explored more in a Marvel TV production as I have nothing to compare it to.
I keep thinking it would be cool to do a Killraven adaptation - a good, gritty SF action series with high production values. Or, since Marvel again has the license to the Howard properties, a Conan series, but done right: adaptations of the original stories, and/or the stories as adapted by Roy Thomas in the comics. No drawn-out origin stories, no brooding like in the Arnie movies, just good old Hyborian swashbuckling.
And since Disneymarvel mentioned team-ups, and b.t. brought up animation, I'll combine the two suggestions and say a team-up animated series, done in the style of Into the Spiderverse. In fact, the Miles Spidey could be the main star. Or, alternatively, an animated series featuring the M2 universe, i.e., Spidergirl (Pete and MJ's kid) and that whole gang.

Hi there,

It's been a while since I commented here, hope everyone is well.

I love DisneyMarvel's question and suggestion of Marvel Two In One! I loved that comic and particular runs (Project Pegasus, Serpent Crown) would be terrific to adapt.

I'd like to see the Guardians of the Galaxy: the original line up, with Vance Astro leading his band of interplanetary rebels. Marvel has done such great world building and those characters would definitely find an audience :)

I agree with Edo's idea for a Conan series done properly with adaptations of the original stories. My favourite Robert E. Howard Conan story is 'Iron Shadows In The Moon' (or 'Shadows In The Moonlight' as it was originally called in 1934) and I'd love to see a live-action version of it :D

You know.. I've grown weary of the "big battle" and "larger than life" characters scenes of Star Wars, Avengers, Suicide Squad and really preferred the more character driven series like Hero for Hire, Gotham, Daredevil, and Jessica Jones on TV.

A la "Gotham," perhaps Marvel could create a young Fantastic Four just prior to the space launch starting from World War 2? Let's be honest, that the 4 of them would ever be on a rocket together in the first place is more than a bit absurd due to their various backgrounds and natures so there should be a lot of "weird" ideas that a good writer could come up with for an interesting show.

For nearly 20 years I've pined away for SOME sort of animated film version of GROO THE WANDERER. . . ! At first I thought he would be great done in a "life-like" computer-animated fashion. . . but have since come to the opinion that a true-to-the-Aragones-source-material cartoon-y treatment (in all its INCREDIBLY deceptive lushness) would be pretty much the best thing ever made on Planet Earth.

I've dwelled on this more than a couple of times.

The biggest danger, IMO, is missing the mark even slightly on Groo's voice. 'Cause-- what the heck does he sound like? It simply could NOT be any of the go-to, stock, cliche', "dumb-guy" voiceovers.... because none of them convey the odd, inherent. . . sincerity?. . . of the character. But obviously he couldn't have yer typical leading-man type voice either. And he's GOT to be believably Slow. Of. Mind (as it were) without showing any effort to it.

Those stories themselves, though--- they totally lend themselves to an animated series format.

Hmmmmmmm-- no longer a Marvel property though, I'm darned sure. . . Rats. . .

I don’t have Disney on my subscription list either but some of the content seems really interesting. I especially like the look on the new Disney/Marvel “What if?” series.

All these suggestions seem great and I would also love to see both a Conan and Kilraven animation series done properly perhaps in a series of cartoon by different artists/animator /writers each week in different styles (like the Netflix “Love, Death & Robots” series).

I would also like to see a teen drama (high quality animation) type show with Peter Parker and Gwen (and the gang from the late 1960s early 70s)). The superhero stuff could mostly take place in the background and focus more on the effects his Spidey alter ego has on his relationship with Gwen and his family/pals etc.

Or an original Nick Fury agent of SHIELD animation in the style (art and writing) of the old Venture Brothers cartoons.

For live action (with lots of CGI) what about a "Monsters on the Prowl" series based on the original stories like the "Oog lives again"?

HB: Ahhhh“Groo” now you’re talking :)

Hiya,

Marvel sort of toyed with what I would love to see in the Spiderman Homecoming movie but didn't follow through. What I would love would be a DAMAGE CONTROL series, either live action or animated, that would run parallel with the MCU. Why this when other far more dramatic options are available?

That's precisely why I want this show, I want comedy, I want everyday people dealing with the fallout, with the massive property destruction, with picking up the pieces after the super folk go home. I want to see Doctor Doom being asked to provide two sources of identification before the office intern accepts his personal check. And I want to see Doom approve of a young man who does as he is told.

Who knows, it could make the Sokovian Accords look like a good idea.

Great topic, Disneymarvel; and great responses as well (good to see you Anthony)!

As for my answer- perhaps a limited series along the lines of "WandaVision", featuring one of Marvel's more quirky supporting characters. Say, Pip the Troll, Richard Rory or even the Impossible Man...

Why hasn't there been a Devil Dinosaur film or tv show yet?
Its a no-brainer - everyone likes dinosaurs, right? And the character was actually created to be spun off into other media after Marvel heard DC were in talks to develop a Kamandi cartoon, and asked Kirby to come up with something similar.

And theres another one, for DC - Kamandi done right. Mind you "done right" is the tricky part if their film and tv series so far are anything to go by (although to be fair on tv at least they seem to be going more for a teen-age audience, so they're not really aiming to appeal to me).
OMAC and The Demon have a lot of potential too, but admittedly I am the sort of person who would be up for a Dingbats Of Danger Street flick.

I go with Charlie Horse and find the emphasis on fights 'n' fx increasingly dull, and generally agree with those who'd like to see Marvel (and DC) do something different.
Although I didn't actually like DC's Joker flick much, maybe the success of a (relatively) low budget comic book film will lead to a few more interesting stand alone projects getting the green light...?

Hiya,

How about this one. A series of shorts where Deadpool is inserting himself into the Marvel Universe via media that has already been produced. Imagine that roundabout shot in the Avengers with DP running about being himself.

Or . . . or he winds up in legacy material, like the Hulk or Captain America tv stuff or even the serial that Cap had back in the Forties. The Seventies Spider-Man show or that made for tv New Mutants pilot.

Could be fun.

Not to knock anyone else's taste - different strokes and all that - but it sounds a bit too self-referential for me pfg. Some continuity and a few in-jokes are ok (welcome, even) but personally I thought too much of that kind of thing, the obsession with their own past, was what killed off superhero comics.
But hey, theres room for different approaches if the studios get away from the notion that every comic book film has to be a mega budget blockbuster.
