All in the Game: A Trivial Matter...

Redartz:  Happy Saturday everyone!  Today we inaugurate another topical category for our BitBA site; it is called "All in the Game". Here we may discuss board games, role-playing games, card games, sporting games, and so on.  And from time to time, we may actually play a little game right here. This is the case for our first episode.

To be specific, today we will try a little exercise in trivia (as much pop culture trivia that gets brought up here in comments, you all should be aces}. Here's the game: We will pick a general topic - for today, one dear to all our Bronze Age hearts: The Avengers!

We will toss out a trivia question, perhaps an easy one, maybe a stumper; and the first commenter who answers will then post a trivia question of his/her own. From there, we will just see how far it goes, how many questions we can answer, and how trivial we all are!

Are you 'game' to give it a try?   Cool, here's the first question:

What was John Buscema's first issue as the Avengers' penciller?

Answer that one and pose another question - that's the game.  Join in and have some fun!

  1. Marvel Database has John Buscema's first Avengers as issue 41, "Let Sleeping Dragons Lie". Though I don't own the original, I do have Marvel Triple Action 33, the reprint.

Another bit of trivia, also from Marvel Database:

Alter Ego #9, pg 42 prints John Buscema's unpublished character sketches for the 5 active male Avengers. Notes indicate that the Avengers were being compared/rendered as several prominent actors of the day. For example: Hercules=Steve Reeves, Quicksilver=Fred Astaire, Captain America=Burt Lancaster, Hawkeye=Anthony Quinn, and Goliath=Roger Culp.

I wonder who Wanda and Jan were patterned after? Raquel Welch for Wanda? Jan?

Okay, my own bit of trivia, also with the Avengers.

In Popular Culture, Iron Man recruits Spider-Man into the Avengers. In Marvel Comics, which Avenger talked to Spider-Man about joining the team?

(It used to seem to me
That my life ran on too fast
And I had to take it slowly
Just to make the good parts last
But when you're born to run
It's so hard to just slow down
So don't be surprised to see me
Back in that bright part of town

I'll be back in the high life again
All the doors I closed one time will open up again
I'll be back in the high life again
All the eyes that watched me once will smile and take me in

And I'll drink and dance with one hand free
Let the world back into me
And on I'll be a sight to see
Back in the high life again

You used to be the best
To make life be life to me
And I hope that you're still out there
And you're like you used to be
    We'll have ourselves a time
And we'll dance 'til the morning sun
And we'll let the good times come in
And we won't stop 'til we're done

We'll be back in the high life again
All the doors I closed one time will open up again
We'll be back in the high life again
All the eyes that watched us once will smile and take us in
And we'll drink and dance with one hand free
And have the world so easily
And oh we'll be a sight to see
Back in the high life again

We'll be back in the high life again
All the doors I closed one time will open up again
We'll be back in the high life again
All the eyes that watched us once will smile and take us in
And we'll drink and dance with one hand free
And have the world so easily
And oh we'll be a sight to see
Back in the high life again).

  3. I have a trivia question for Prowler! DO you type the lyrics in or copy/paste? I just need to know!

  4. To answer Prowler's trivia question: "In Popular Culture, Iron Man recruits Spider-Man into the Avengers. In Marvel Comics, which Avenger talked to Spider-Man about joining the team?"

    The answer is Thor.

Now for my trivia question. And we'll keep it Avengers related.

Who were the three super-villains that Count Nefaria stole power from to make himself into a super man?

    ReplyDelete
  5. William = from my favorite comic book of all time Avengers 164, Nefaria stole power from the original Power Man, Whirlwind, and the Living Laser.

My turn: Who was revealed to be behind the mask of Scorpio of the Zodiac in Avengers #72?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Hmmm, I think it was Jacob Fury, Nick's brother. (Though that kept getting retconned over the years).

Since we're doing Avengers stuff, what company did Hawkeye go to work for when he left the Avengers in 1979?

    ReplyDelete
  7. Hawkeye went to work for CTE (Cross Technological Enterprises) which I think is the same company in the Ant-Man movie.

Clarification- while Jacob Fury was the original Scorpio, it was Nick Fury (a supposedly dead Nick Fury) who turned out to be Scorpio this time.

Next Question: What role did Wonder Man play on TV to the great amusement of the Beast?

  8. Hmmm, I know Wondy played Arkon in the movies, but I can't remember his TV role; wasn't he on some kiddie show?

Next time, do Spidey trivia ... I might be better at that :)

  9. Marti, you have me stumped! I'll toss out a guess: Henry Peter Gyrich? ;)

  10. Where prowls the Prowler!
...that would have made a great cover blurb back in the day.
Okay, I got one. I have no doubt one of you wise guys knows this.
Korvac was the villain in a major Avengers arc. but who was the first Marvel hero to clash with Korvac in single battle and in what comic?
No Wikipedia! We're on the honor system! I have spoken!

  11. Wondy was Mr. Muscles on a kiddie show - pies in face and all - much to the Beast's amusement. He later portrayed Akron in a movie.

  12. I know in Avengers 167, Thor recounts his battle with Korvac fighting alongside The Guardians of The Galaxy, so that doesn't seem right. I'll have to dig out my copy of Thor Annual 6 to see if Thor fought him in single combat.

Dang it!!! Now I won't be able to sleep!!!

    (Well talk on the street
    Says you might go solo
    A good friend of mine
saw you leavin' by your back door

I need to know, I need to know
If you think you're gotta leave
    Then you better say so
I need to know, I need to know
Cause I don't know how long I can hold on
If you're making me wait, if you're leadin' me on
    I need to know

    Who would've thought that
    You'd fall for his line
    All of a sudden
    It's me on the outside

I need to know, I need to know
If you think you're gotta leave
    Then you better say so
I need to know, I need to know
Cause I don't know how long I can hold on
If you're making me wait, if you're leadin' me on
    I need to know

I need to know, I need to know
If you think you're gotta leave
    Then you better say so
I need to know, I need to know
Cause I don't know how long I can hold on
If you're making me wait, if you're leadin' me on
    I need to know

    I need to know
    I need to know
    Baby, I need to know).

PS: I have a robot that does all my copy/pasting!!!

  13. Nope! Not Thor!
Although they did tangle. That was a pretty good comic, actually.

  14. I think Korvac was in one of the Giant Size Defenders issues early on, so I say maybe it was Nighthawk or Valkyrie to fight him. I'd have to look.

I will say that I liked how Korvac looked when the Badoon attached him to a machine from the waist down - punishment for falling asleep on duty -now that is a harsh penalty and a tough boss. Even so, it was a better look than the short-shorts tube sock Korvac. It is interesting how elevated Korvac's powers were considering his character evolved from a low level tech and traitor.

  15. Okay, according to Avengers 167, Thor fought Korvac with the Guardians of the Galaxy in Thor Annual 6. According to my list of boxes, Thor Annual is in Box 18. According to Korvac's back story in Thor Annual 6, he fought DR. STRANGE in Giant Size Defenders # 3!!! According to my list of boxes, I do NOT own Giant Size Defenders #3. But there it is.......

(The lyrics for Boom, It's On
by the Ying Yang Twins would go
here but they are explicit, very
    explicit, very).

    ReplyDelete
  16. Yeah, it was Doc Strange.
Korvac was a cyborg back then, so it was your basic technology vs. magic type fight.
Namor fought a big lizard guy, and I seem to remember a skeleton on a flying horse.
